    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for deriving digital signals from analog variations of different sensing elements in a transducer. Each sensing device controls the frequency of a variable frequency oscillator, which is energized when a reading is to be taken for that specific sensing device. The periodic signal is coupled to a first counter which counts a presettable total number of cycles so as to establish a variable time period proportioned to the value represented by the then existing state of the sensing device. Concurrently, a second counter is operated for a like time interval, but counts cycles from a fixed frequency clock source at a much higher frequency. The number of cycles counted by the second counter is proportional to the analog signal from the sensing device. This arrangement enables the analog signals from the sensing devices to be digitized in sequence with compact circuitry having low power drain. The different values derived from the sensing device can be used in complex analysis of one or more parameters that are being evaluated, without danger of interharmonics, cross talk or interference between the different units. By changing the presettings of the first counter, the resolution of the transducer can be varied, enabling operation in different ranges with adequate accuracy. Also, where a number of sensing elements are used in a transducer, resolution can be selectively varied when digitizing readings from the different elements.

    • An implantable blood flow sensor for measuring a blood flow rate through a blood vessel within a person's body. The flow sensor includes a rigid cylindrical tube, sized to fit within the blood vessel, a heater attached to the tube, and a pyroelectric detector located within the tube. A predetermined amount of heat energy is produced by the heater and the pyroelectric detector monitors the resultant temperature change and generates a temperature signal based on the temperature change. A processor generates a data signal, based on the temperature change, that indicates the blood flow rate through the blood vessel or artery. The rigid tube protects the pyroelectric detector from external forces that may produce unwanted signals due to piezoelectric effects. Additionally, the heater may be incorporated into one of the electrodes of the pyroelectric detector as a serpentine path in the electrode that forms a resistive heating element. Also, a switch may be provided that prevents induced voltage signals caused by currents through the heater from reaching the processor.

    • A flow sensor adapted for placement along a pacing lead or other catheter comprises a thermopile formed on the outer surface of a tubular substrate. The thermopile comprises a plurality of interconnected conductors of an alternating metal type. Junctions between conductors of the thermopile are alternately located near the longitudinal ends of the flow sensor, so that a voltage generated by the thermopile indicates the difference in temperature between the ends of the flow sensor. To measure blood flow with the flow sensor, an alternating current is induced through the thermopile to heat the flow sensor in a generally symmetrical manner. A voltage generated by the thermopile is then measured to obtain a sample of the magnitude and direction of the velocity of blood flow.

    • A power converter apparatus adapted for use in a defibrillating cardiac pacemaker, to selectively provide a prescribed high voltage useful in treating a cardiac fibrillation. A pulse generator-cyclically applies a relatively low battery voltage V.sub.s to a step-up transformer, to controllably charge a high-voltage capacitor. The time durations of the cyclic applications of the battery voltage V.sub.s are controlled by digital feedback of several parameters, including peak transformer current, average transformer current., battery voltage V.sub.s, and the voltage on the high-voltage capacitor. If any of the measured parameters is determined to be outside a predetermined limit, the pulsing of the transformer is incrementally modified. A smooth, efficient charging of the high-voltage capacitor thereby is provided.
