    • The present invention generally relates to particulate compositions and methods for making the compositions. It specifically relates to improved spray drying methods that substantially reduce the production of small particles that pose industrial hygiene concerns for factory workers and product consumers. In a composition aspect, the present invention provides an atomized aqueous composition. The composition is formed using a spray-drying apparatus. It includes 0.001 to 0.10 weight percent of a polymer, which is selected from a group consisting of a cellulose-based polymer, a gum, and a synthetic polymer. It further includes at least one polypeptide, which is present in the aqueous composition at a concentration greater than 0.01 weight percent.

    • Microcapsules of a microcapsule formed of a polyurea shell wall and an encapsulated ingredient or ingredients enclosed within the wall, the wall comprising at least one oligomeric acetal having the moiety in which R is (a) a moiety containing a chain of from 5 to about 40 optionally substituted carbon atoms, (b) a moiety containing a chain of from 4 to about 40 carbon atoms and one or more internally linked oxygen or sulfur atoms or —NH-groups, or (c) an optionally substituted ethylene or propylene moiety Z is (a) an optionally substituted phenyl group, (b) an optionally substituted C1-C20 alkyl, C2-C20 alkenyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl or C5-C8 cycloalkenyl group, or (c) benzoyl, and n is 1 if R is (a) or (b), or is 2-20 if R is (c). The microcapsules are acid-sensitive and the capsule walls are relatively readily degraded or disintegrated by contacting the microcapsules with an acidic substance, preferably an organic or inorganic acid whereby the encapsulated ingredient or ingredients are released into the surrounding environment. The invention is particularly suitable for encapsulation of biologically active substances and agrochemicals, and most preferably pesticides for foliar treatment.

    • Microcapsules containing a substantially water-insoluble liquid material, such as an anilide herbicide, and optionally also a herbicide antidote, within a porous shell to effect a slow rate of release of said herbicide (and optionally said antidote) through said shell, are produced by a process which comprises (a) providing an organic solution comprising said material and an etherified amino resin prepolymer dissolved therein which from about 50% to about 98% of the methylol groups of said prepolymer have been etherified with a C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 alcohol; (b) creating an emulsion of said organic solution in a continuous phase aqueous solution comprising water and a surface-active agent, wherein said emulsion comprises discrete droplets of said organic solution, there being formed thereby an interface between the discrete droplets of organic solution and the surrounding continuous phase aqueous solution; and (c) causing in situ self-condensation and curing of said amino resin prepolymer in the organic phase of said discrete droplets adjacent to said interface by simultaneously heating said emulsion to a temperature between about 20.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C., and adding to said emulsion an acidifying agent and maintaining said emulsion at a pH of between about 0 to about 4 for a sufficient period of time to allow substantial completion of in situ condensation of said resin prepolymers to convert the liquid droplets of said organic solution to capsules consisting of solid permeable polymer shells enclosing said liquid material.Also disclosed are the microcapsules formed by the above-described process.
