    • The new copolymers based on maleic anhydride and .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compounds contain, as bivalent structural units,A: 20 to 95 mole % of the structural element ##STR1## B: 0 to 40 mole % of the structural element ##STR2## C: and 0 to 40 mole % of the structural element ##STR3## the sum of the mole percents of (A), (B) and (C) being 100, and wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, alkyl, optionally substituted aryl or the ester group ##STR4## in which R.sup.4 represents alkyl with 1 to 20 carbon atoms,R.sup.3 denotes an alkyl, cycloalkyl or optionally substituted aryl radical with 1 to 20 carbon atoms andX and Y are identical or different and represent the group--O--R.sup.5in whichR.sup.5 denotes hydrogen, a cation or alkyl with 1 to 40 carbon atoms, orX and Y represent the group--NHR.sup.3in which R.sup.3 has the abovementioned meaning,at least one of the radicals X and Y representing the group --O--R.sup.5, and at least one of the radicals in the radicals X and Y containing at least 18 carbon atoms.The new copolymers can be prepared by reacting alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compounds with monoalcohols and monoamines. They can be used as paraffin inhibitors.

    • The present invention relates to new copolymers based on maleic anhydride/.alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compounds and characterized in that they consist of(A) 10 to 40 mol percent of the structural element ##STR1## (B) 40 to 80 mol percent of the structural element ##STR2## and (C) 10 to 50 mol percent of the structural element ##STR3## where the total of mol percentages of (A), (B) and (C) is 100 and whereR.sub.1 =hydrogen or alkyl,R.sub.2 =hydrogen, alkyl or optionally substituted aryl,R.sub.3 =a hydrocarbon radical having 10 to 22 C atoms,R.sub.4 =a hydrocarbon radical having 10 to 22 C atoms, andX=an oxygen atom or an NR.sub.5 group where R.sub.5 represents a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 18 C atoms.The copolymers in question are excellent active ingredients for sizing agents for paper and are suitable not only for pulp-sizing but also for surface-sizing.

    • An improved process for the production of a substantially equimolecular copolymer of maleic acid anhydride and diisobutylene in which from 10 to 100 mole % of the anhydride groups are esterified with linear or branched aliphatic monoalcohols containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms or with cycloaliphatic monoalcohols containing from 5 to 6 carbon atoms to form the corresponding semiesters, wherein shortly before or after the end of the solution or suspension copolymerization of maleic acid anhydride and diisobutylene a monomer corresponding to the general formula ##STR1## in which R=H, CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --OR.sub.2, --O--CO--CH.sub.3, ##STR2## --CH.sub.2 OH, --CH.sub.2 O--C--CH.sub.3, R.sub.1 =H , CH.sub.3 andR.sub.2 =a linear or branched alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms,Or mixtures of these monomers with one another are added to the polymerization mixture in quantities of from 1 to 12 mole %, based on the maleic acid anhydride used. The aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic alkali, amine or ammonium salt solutions of the semiesters of the copolymer are highly effective as anionic sizing agents for paper.
