    • A method and system for providing a magnetic transducer having an air-bearing surface (ABS) are described. The magnetic transducer includes a base layer, a perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) pole on the base layer, an additional pole, a write shield, a write gap between the PMR pole and a portion of the write shield, and coil(s) that energize at least the additional pole. The base layer includes a first portion proximate to the ABS and a second portion recessed from the ABS. The first portion is nonmagnetic, while the second portion is magnetic. The PMR pole has a first front portion proximate to the ABS. The additional pole has a second front portion recessed from the ABS. At least a portion of the additional pole resides between the PMR pole and write shield. At least a portion of the write gap resides on the front portion of the PMR pole.

    • A method of manufacturing a thin film merged magnetic head including an inductive write structure and a magnetoresistive sensor uses a patterned protection layer to protect a second shield/bottom pole layer in regions spaced from the pole tip of the inductive write structure. A window is provided in the protection layer. During manufacture, the configuration comprises a first shield layer, a magnetoresistive element, a second shield layer serving as a bottom pole, a protection layer, a protection window, a write gap, a top pole, and a pole tip structure. The use of a protection layer and window results in the formation of channels in the second shield layer adjacent to a pedestal that supports the inductive write structure. The channels prevent magnetic flux from extending toward the second shield layer beyond the width of the pole tip structure. This structure reduces side writing with a consequent improvement in off-track performance. The width of the second shield layer allows the magnetoresistive element to be shielded.

    • A magnetoresistive read transducer includes a magnetoresistive (MR) layer having end regions spaced by a central active regions. A pair of hard-magnetic layers provide the longitudinal magnetic bias to the magnetoresistive layer. Each of the hard-magnetic layers is disposed in contact with one of the end regions of the magnetoresistive layer. In addition, a pair of electrical leads provide the bias current to the magnetoresistive layer. Each of the electrical leads is also disposed in contact with one of the end regions of the magnetoresistive layer. This arrangement enable the transducer of the present invention with the most optimal design. In essence, electrical current directly passes through the central active region of the magnetoresistive layer via the electrical leads as a low electrical resistance path. Magnetic flux of the longitudinal bias directly passes through the central active region of the magnetoresistive layer with a reduced probability of magnetic discontinuity.

    • A method provides a PMR transducer. In one aspect, the method includes forming a trench in an intermediate layer using reactive ion etch(es). The trench top is wider than its bottom. In this aspect, the method also includes providing a seed layer using atomic layer deposition and providing a PMR pole on the seed layer. Portion(s) of the seed layer and PMR pole reside in the trench. In another aspect, the method includes providing a mask including a trench having a top wider than its bottom. In this aspect, the method includes providing mask material in the trench, providing an intermediate layer on the mask material and removing the mask material to provide another trench in the intermediate layer. In this aspect, the method also includes providing a PMR pole in the additional trench.
