    • Disclosed is a horizontal drive system and method for operating a video display capable of precisely controlling over a wide timing range the interval between the arrival of the leading edge of the input drive pulse and the initiation of the flyback pulse thus permitting the horizontal output to the video display to be synchronized to a great variety of horizontal drive input signals. The leading edge of the horizontal drive pulse triggers a variable time delay monostable multivibrator, the locked output signal of which is coupled to a precision astable multivibrator. Potentiometer adjustment of the monostable multivibrator provides for adjusting video information position with respect to raster scan while the astable multivibrator acts as the oscillator in synchronizing horizontal sweep circuitry to the horizontal input drive signal.

    • Circuitry is described for driving the primary winding of a horizontal output transformer without the use of a conventional drive transformer. The horizontal output transistor is coupled to a tap on the output transformer and is switched off and on to excite the transformer. The horizontal output transistor is driven, in turn, by a driver transistor whose collector is also coupled to a tap on the output transformer such that adequate power is derived from the transformer to drive the output transistor into saturation. The driver transistor receives horizontal scan rate pulse from input circuitry which is preferably adapted to provide a path to ground for stored charges in the output transistor so that it may be rapidly turned fully off when a scan pulse terminates.

    • A cathode ray tube (CRT) in a video display utilizes an anti-ringing system for minimizing beam scanning distortion at the start of trace. This distortion is due to velocity modulation of the scanning beam caused by high frequency, resonant energy in the inductances of the linearity and width coils and the electromagnetic deflection yoke, all of which are in series. The first half of beam scan cycle is accomplished by the conduction of the damper diode while operation of the horizontal output transistor provides beam deflection current for the second half of horizontal sweep. A low impedance is introduced in the circuit for a short period during the start of damper diode current conduction by means of a voltage biasing diode network. This low impedance dampens out high frequency resonant ringing without degrading video display performance by excessive resistive loading.

    • In a horizontal drive circuit for a video display, means are provided for sensing the horizontal output pulse used to energize the high voltage sweep transformer and, in turn, the electrodes and deflection coils in a cathode ray tube (CRT). Horizontal output pulse height which represents not only the voltage applied to the CRT, but also retrace pulse duration is detected and utilized to terminate the video output when the horizontal pulse voltage level exceeds a predetermined value. Because this approach uses the collector pulse output of the horizontal output transistor to detect high voltage conditions, video shutdown during unsafe CRT operation is available not only for excessive peak voltage conditions, but also for improper retrace time operation due, for example, to sweep transformer malfunction.

    • A power supply for use in a computer terminal capable of providing a plurality of direct voltage signals to the computer terminal logic system while isolating this logic circuitry from the line voltage is disclosed. A high frequency power supply transformer and associated circuitry provides the various direct voltage signals to the computer terminal logic system and provides isolation between the line input and logic circuitry. Parallel isolation is provided by a horizontal sync coupling circuit which is driven by the logic system and which, in turn, synchronizes the horizontal deflection system. The direct voltage signals provided to the logic supply system are both scan- and pulse-derived from the horizontal sweep signal permitting various computer terminal systems to be operated by display-derived power output signals.
