    • A separation device for separating threshed leaf tobacco into (1) lighter particles such as lamina containing little or no stem and (2) heavier particles such as lamina with attached stems or naked stems. The device includes a housing defining a separation chamber. A fan circulation system having an improved variable flow plural flow path arrangement establishes a generally upward air flow through the separation chamber. A tobacco supply inlet is disposed at an inlet side of the separation chamber for receiving a supply of threshed leaf tobacco downwardly therethrough and a threshed leaf tobacco projecting winnower is disposed below the tobacco supply inlet for projecting the supply so that (1) the lighter particles are generally carried upwardly by the air flow within the separation chamber and (2) the heavier particles move generally downwardly through the air flow. An improved system is provided for receiving and discharging the lighter particles carried upwardly by the air flow within the separation chamber. A heavy particle outlet on an outlet side of the separation chamber is provided for receiving heavy particles downwardly therethrough. The inlet and outlet are positioned and constructed such that the separation device can be mounted in side by side relation to a similar separation device having a similar inlet such that the heavier particles moving downwardly through the outlet of the separation device pass downwardly through the similar inlet of the similar separation device.

    • An apparatus for separating tobacco stem particles from a mixture containing such particles and tobacco stalk particles obtained in a threshing and separating process employed in a tobacco stemmery includes a hollow drum having a longitudinal axis, the hollow drum being mounted for rotational movement about its axis and the axis being disposed at a slight angle with respect to the horizontal so as to establish a higher inlet end and a lower outlet end of the hollow drum. A mixture handling structure is constructed and arranged with respect to the inlet end of the hollow drum to feed a supply of a mixture containing tobacco stem particles and tobacco stalk particles obtained in the threshing and separating process into the inlet end of the hollow drum. The hollow drum has a periphery formed of a foraminus structure that includes a plurality of generally axially extending parallel bars spaced apart a distance sufficient to allow the passage of tobacco stem particles therethrough while substantially preventing the passage of tobacco stalk particles therethrough. A power operated assembly rotates the hollow drum about its axis at a speed sufficient to cause a portion of the mixture entering the inlet end and falling on the lowermost bars which has not passed through the spaces between the bars to be carried through a cycle which includes an upward movement with the movement of the bars and a falling movement downwardly onto the lowermost bars at a position downstream and a repetition of the cycle until the remaining mixture is moved out the lower outlet end of the hollow drum. A tobacco stem handling structure below the hollow drum receives the tobacco stem particles passing through the spaces between the bars as the particles of the mixture are cycled within the rotating hollow drum and moves the tobacco stem particles away. A tobacco stalk particle handling structure at the outlet end of the hollow drum receives the remaining mixture moved out of the lower outlet end of the hollow drum and moves the remaining mixture away.

    • A method is provided for separating lighter particles from heavier particles in a mixture thereof utilizing a separation chamber for continuous movement of particles therethrough. The chamber has a pair of opposite sides one of which is a projecting side and one of which is a receiving side, the projecting side of the chamber having an inlet opening for receiving the lighter and heavier particles of the mixture with the receiving side of the chamber having an outlet opening disposed generally across from the inlet opening. The method includes establishing a generally upward air flow in the chamber between the opposite sides thereof, projecting particles from the projecting side of the chamber across the generally upward air flow therein so that lighter particles are carried upwardly by the air flow in the chamber and particles including heavier particles move downwardly through the generally upward air flow in each chamber, causing some of the particles projected from the projecting side of the chamber to reach the receiving side thereof and to pass through the outlet opening therein to be subsequently processed, receiving the lighter particles carried upwardly by the air flow within the chamber and moving the same in such a way as to enable them to discharge from the chamber, and receiving the particles including heavier particles which move downwardly within the generally upward air flow in the chamber and moving the same in such a way as to enable them to be discharged from the chamber.

    • A high efficiency tobacco separator for separating lighter particles such as leaf or lamina from heavier particles such as stem in a tobacco mixture have a primary and a secondary air separation chamber. Two winnowers are provided in the primary chamber for tossing tobacco mixture back and forth across the chamber. A generally upward air flow is established in both the primary chamber and the secondary chamber, and the air flow, combined with inertial and gravitational effects, functions to separate lighter particles from heavier particles by entraining the lighter particles in the upward air flow. A conveyor assembly is positioned across the bottom of a primary chamber and extending into and projecting into the secondary chamber. The conveyor arrangement accumulates heavier particles which fall to the bottom of the primary chamber and projects them into the secondary chamber where additional air flow separation occurs. Entrained lighter particles are accelerated towards the top of the primary and secondary chambers and are collected. Heavier particles fall to the bottom of the secondary chamber and are collected.

    • An apparatus for scanning and sorting tobacco leaves includes a conveyor to convey a flow of tobacco leaves. The flow of tobacco leaves includes acceptable and unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles. An air flow source lifts and accelerates the flow of leaves and particles to a speed at which the leaves and particles are separated. A duct contains the lifted and accelerated flow. A scanning device scans the flow in the duct and generates a signal upon detection of an unacceptable leaf and/or undesirable particle. A rejection device responds to the signal and forces the unacceptable leaf and/or undesirable particle from the duct. A method of scanning and sorting tobacco leaves includes conveying a flow of tobacco leaves including acceptable and unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles, lifting and accelerating the flow to a speed at which the leaves and particles are separated, scanning the separated leaves and particles to detect unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles, and forcing unacceptable leaves and/or undesirable particles from the accelerated flow of leaves. The flow may be accelerated to a speed of between 4,000-6,000 ft/min. The scanning device may be an optical or laser scanning device that scans the flow between 2,000-12,000 times per second.
