    • A manufacturing tool for finishing a preformed scroll for use in a scroll type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. The tool includes a working member having an end plate and a first involute element extending from one end surface of said end plate. A cutting edge extends along the inner side wall of an axial end of the first involute, and the end plate has a plurality of arc shaped holes along the outer side wall of the first involute element. A second involute element is rotatably coupled to the working member and interfits with the first involute element in a disposition to define a radial gap between the first and second involute elements. A cutting edge extends along the outer side wall of a first axial end of the second involute. A plurality of pins project axially from the other axial end of the second involute element and penetrate through the arc shaped holes. A rotatable member has a plurality of holes extending in the axial direction. The pins have axial end portions which extend into the holes in the rotatable member to couple the rotatable member to the second involute member and to transmit the rotation of the rotatable member to the second involute element so that the relative rotation between the first and second involute elements adjusts the gap between them.

    • A method and tool for manufacturing a scroll for use in a scroll type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. The method, which uses the tool of the present invention, comprises the steps of: (a) providing a tool formed by a mold including a first molding member having a first involute element and an end plate having a plurality of arc shaped holes; a second involute element rotatably coupled to the first molding member through a plurality of pins axially projecting from an axial end surface thereof, the first and second involute elements forming a radial gap; a rotatable member disposed along the end surface of the end plate of the first involute element and coupled to the pins of the second involute element to transmit the rotation thereof to the second involute element; and a second molding member to cover the open end of the radial gap, the second molding member having an indentation facing and in communication with the open end of the radial gap; (b) filling the radial gap between the first and second involute elements and the indentation with molten metal to form the molten metal into the shape of the spiral element and end plate of the scroll, (c) rotating the rotatable member to enlarge the radial gap after the molten metal solidifies; and (d) removing the scroll formed in the radial gap and the identation from the first molding member.

    • A scroll type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed which includes a pair of scrolls each having a circular end plate and spiral element extending therefrom. The scrolls are maintained at an angular and radial offset so that both spiral elements interfit to form a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. Upon relative orbital motion of the scrolls, the line contacts shift along the spiral curved surfaces of the spiral elements to thereby change the volume of the fluid pockets. In particular, according to the present invention, the thickness of the spiral element of the orbiting scroll is gradually from the inner end of the spiral element to its outer end to increase the mechanical strength of the spiral element at its central portion while avoiding an increase in the centrifugal force generated by the orbiting scroll during orbital motion. On the other hand, the thickness of the spiral element of the other scroll, i.e., the fixed scroll, is gradually increased from the inner end of the spiral element to its outer end to compensate for the change in shape of the facing spiral element of the orbiting scroll.

    • A scroll type fluid displacement apparatus, in particular, a compressor unit is disclosed. The unit includes a housing, a pair of scroll members which are comprised of an end plate and a spiral wrap extending from one surface of the end plate. A driving mechanism and a rotation preventing mechanism are connected to one of the scroll members to effect relative orbital motion while rotation of the scroll member is prevented. A turning mechanism is associated with one of the scroll members to selectively turn the scroll member and vary the angular offset between the wraps, whereby the compressive effect of the scroll members can be controlled independently of the operation of the driving mechanism.

    • A fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. The fluid displacement apparatus includes a housing, a fixed fluid displacement member and an orbiting fluid displacement member having an end plate from which an orbiting wall extends. The orbiting member interfits with the fixed member to make a plurality of line contacts to define at least one sealed-off fluid pocket. A drive shaft is rotatably supported by the housing, and has a drive pin which is radially offset from the axis of the drive shaft. The end plate of orbiting piston member has a boss, and bushing is rotatably supported within the boss. The bushing has an eccentric hole disposed eccentrically with respect to the center of the bushing, and the drive pin is inserted in the eccentric hole. A restriction device restricts the swing angle of the bushing and is coupled between the drive shaft and the bushing. The restriction device includes a spring to push the orbiting fluid displacement member in the direction to reduce the orbital radius of the orbiting member. The line contacts between fixed member and orbiting member are thereby separated until the orbiting member reaches a predetermined desired rotational frequency. The compressor thus starts up in an unloaded condition.

The center portion of at least one of the wraps is higher than the remaining portion thereof. The center portion extends substantially from the inner end of the spiral wrap outwardly at least to the location of the line contact between the curved surfaces of the wraps when the innermost pair of fluid pockets are merged into a single fluid pocket to form the high pressure space near the center of the scrolls. This construction prevents abnormal wear of the spiral wrap and the opposite end plate which might otherwise occur during axial slant of the orbiting scroll, or which might be caused by non-parallelism of the scroll end plates, without compromising the important sealing of the central high pressure space.
