    • An optically-coupled device package including a housing containing an optical device further includes an optical fiber assembly which comprises an optical cable with a support sleeve on its end. The support sleeve comprises a body with an axial opening therethrough and has a plurality of holes near a first end. The optical cable includes a first portion comprising a protective coating overlying an optical fiber, and a second portion comprising an optical fiber extending from said coating. The cable enters the first end of the sleeve and nodules integral with the protective coating extend into the plurality of holes. In one embodiment, the optical fiber is sealed to the inside of the sleeve through a solder window provided through the side of the sleeve. The second end of the sleeve extends through an aperture in said housing and is aligned to the device therein. The invention also includes a method for making such a fiber assembly which comprises inserting the optical cable into a first end of the sleeve, forming nodules integral with the protective coating which extend into the plurality of holes. The method may comprise sealing the optical fiber to the inside of the sleeve through a solder window in said sleeve. Fabrication of an optically-coupled device package further comprises inserting the fiber assembly through an aperture in said housing and aligning said fiber with the optical device therein.

    • An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system is operable to produce tissue Doppler images and data for diagnostic use. The system includes a visual or audible alert which alerts a user to the possibility of aliasing in the tissue Doppler image data and the need to reset the velocity scale of the color map. The visual alert may be a light on the display screen or control panel or contrasting colors to the colors of the color map in an area of the image where aliasing may be occurring. The visual alert may be a histogram displayed in alignment with the color bar of the tissue Doppler image. The indication by the histogram of image values at a velocity limit of the color bar indicates a need to adjust the color velocity scaling.

    • An animal cage comprising an enclosure having a shape capable of rolling movement. The enclosure has openings therein, preferably formed of mesh, for passage of gases and matter therethrough and to prevent egress of the animal. The enclosure further includes a door for passage of the animal and may include a food reservoir and fluid reservoir to provide food and fluid to an animal housed within the cage.     • A heat exchanger for heating liquids with other liquids or vapors. An inner flow tube is carried concentrically within an outer flow tube to define an inner passage and also an annular passage. A first manifold directs all of the incoming fluid from one fluid source to either the inner or annular passage. A second manifold directs all of the incoming cooler fluid from the other fluid source to the other passage. A third manifold at the other end of the outer tube discharges the fluid from it so that it does not mix with the inner tube fluid. The outer tube is immersed in inner tube fluid to cause heat transfer through the walls of the inner tube and outer tube.

    • A spectral tissue Doppler processor for an ultrasound system produces Doppler phase shift estimates of sequences of signal samples from a sample volume with a short-lag autocorrelator. The autocorrelation products are summed and an arc tangent taken of each sum to produce angle estimates. The angle estimates, which are proportional to the tissue motion velocity, are plotted, smoothed, and displayed as a spectral tissue Doppler display. The angle estimates are also used to produce the audio Doppler signal which is frequency-adjustable by a user. The spectral Doppler display exhibits good time and velocity resolution for motion which is less than that of blood flow such as myocardial motion. Major causes of blurring, unevenness, and distortion are reduced or eliminated.
