    • In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a photographic element is disclosed comprising a silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith an acetanilide-based yellow dye forming coupler and a stabilizer compound of the formula S-I: wherein R0 represents an aryl or heterocyclic group; Ra is H or a substituent group; L represents an alkylene linking group and p represents 0 or 1; and Rb is a substituent group, provided that substituent groups represented by Ra and Rb may be joined to form a ring. The presence of substituted amine compounds of formula S-I improves the efficiency of dye formation reaction for acetanilide-based couplers. When used in combination with known bis-phenolic stabilizers, substantial improvements in the light stability of the image dyes can be also be obtained. Accordingly, photographic elements of the present invention upon exposure and photographic processing exhibit good activity and yield yellow dye images that have low fading when exposed to light.

    • The present invention relates to a silver halide photographic element comprising a dye-forming coupler of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is selected from an alkyl group, an aryl group, a 5-10 membered heterocyclic group containing one or more O, N or S atoms, each of which groups is unsubstituted or substituted, or a substituted amino group;R.sup.2 is an unsubstituted alkyl group having a secondary or tertiary carbon atom attached to the oxygen atom;X is hydrogen or a coupling-off group; andR.sup.3 is a substituent and n is 0 to 4; orwherein R.sup.2, as defined above, and an R.sup.3 substituent may together with the O atom form a 5-10 membered heterocyclic group which may contain one or more further heteroatoms selected from O, N and S, said group being unsubstituted or substituted; andwherein at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 separately or in combination constitutes a ballast group,the couplers providing enhanced light stability together with acceptable dye hue in images produced from photographic materials containing them.

The couplers for use in the element of the invention yield cyan images of good hue, with good stability to heat, humidity and light, whilst retaining the other properties desirable for good photographic performance.

The stabilizer is used to enhance the image stability of the dye formed from a cyan, magenta or yellow dye-forming coupler without significantly degrading other photographic properties.

    • The invention relates to an ultrahigh contrast photographic material comprising a support bearing a silver halide emulsion layer, containing a hydrazide nucleating agent in the emulsion layer or a hydrophilic colloid layer, characterised in that the nucleating agent of formula (I) comprises (a) two nicotinamide moieties, which may be the same or different, which are linked by a linking group, and (b) a hydrazide moiety linked to only one of the nicotinamide moieties. The nucleator of formula (I) may be in combination with a nucleator of formula (II) which comprises a dimeric molecule comprising two monomers linked by a linking group, each monomer of which (a) may be the same or different and (b) comprises a hydrazide moiety and a nicotinamide moiety. The photographic material provides unexpectedly good nucleation in the absence of, or with reduced amounts of, booster and in a developer whose pH is variable, and further with lower chemical spread and pepper fog. When the synthesis provides both a compound of formula (I) and (II), the products can be used directly without a separation step, providing a cost advantage.
