    • An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for efficiently providing bias voltages. A first switching regulator stage that includes an inductor receives an input voltage and provides as an output an intermediate regulated output voltage. A second switching regulator stage receives as input the intermediate regulated output voltage and outputs a regulated main output voltage. The second switching regulator stage includes at least one switch controller that provides one or more signals to one or more switches in the second switching regulator stage to regulate the main output voltage of the second regulator stage. A secondary bias module utilizes a secondary winding coupled with the inductor of the first regulator stage to provide a secondary bias output voltage to the switch controller of the second switching regulator stage. The secondary bias output voltage is referenced to the main output voltage of the second switching regulator stage.

    • An apparatus for efficient power supply operation variable input line voltages. The apparatus includes a detection module that senses the input line voltage to the power supply and determines whether it is high or low voltage. A turn module sets the turns ratio of the transformer to a first turns ratio if the input line voltage is low voltage. The turn module sets the turns ratio to a second turns ratio if the input line voltage is high. In one embodiment of the invention, a high voltage is between 180 and 250 volts, while a low voltage is between 90 and 130 volts. A primary module sets the boost voltage of the power supply's boost stage to a first voltage if the input line voltage is low, while it sets the boost voltage to a second voltage if the input line voltage is high. The first voltage may, for example, be 200 volts, and the second voltage 400 volts.

    • An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for safely connecting a device to a power source. The invention includes a power bus switch that operates to selectively allow operational power to flow from a power supply to a load. The operational power is independent of auxiliary power which may be separately provided to the load. A detection module determines whether an input impedance of the load is greater than a minimum impedance threshold in response to the load being connected to the power supply. A switch module causes the power bus switch to allow operational power to flow to the load in response to the detection module determining that the input impedance is greater than the minimum impedance threshold. Thus, if the load has an acceptable input impedance level, then operational power may be provided to the load without risk of failure to the power system.

    • An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for measuring voltage, current, and power in a power supply. The apparatus consists of a voltage measuring module which measures the peak voltage through an inductor in a switching power supply stage of the power supply for a portion of the switching period. A current measuring module measures the peak current in the switching power supply stage for a portion of the switching period. The measured currents and voltages are proportional to the voltage and current at a point in the power supply where a power measurement is desired. The voltage and current values are multiplied along with a constant to provide an accurate measure of the power at a point in the power supply. The constant generally includes a combination of a calibration constant, an RMS conversion factor, a voltage conversion factor, and a current conversion factor.

    • An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for a low cost fault-tolerant power supply. The invention includes a power supply that regulates a bus voltage under varying load conditions. The power supply includes at least one pulse-width modulated stage, where each pulse-width modulated stage includes at least two DC-to-DC converters connected and operating in parallel. Each converter includes a switch and a fuse connected in series where the fuse disconnects the switch in response to an over current condition sufficient to open the fuse. The power supply also includes a pulse-width modulator for each stage of the power supply that regulates a bus voltage controlled by the stage by sensing the controlled bus voltage and adjusting a switching duty cycle to regulate the controlled bus voltage to a target value. The pulse-width modulator for a stage provides a substantially identical switching duty cycle to each switch of the stage.

A regulator module receives a first power waveform from a first power supply module and a second power waveform from a second power supply module and provides power to a low voltage, regulated output bus. A fuse interrupts a flow of electrical current in response to the electrical current rising above a current rating of the fuse. A fault module receives the current amplitude signal and sends the OFF signal to the relay in response to the amplitude of the electrical current exceeding a threshold value. The relay, the fuse, and the threshold value are selected so that a switching time of the relay is less than an opening time of the fuse for an amplitude of the electrical current between the threshold value and a maximum fault current value, so that the relay prevents the fuse from opening.
