    • The present invention comprises a steering system selectively operable in one of three modes: steer-by-wire, electronic power assist steering (EPAS), and manual steering. The steer-by-wire system includes a driver interface system (DIS), a road wheel actuator system (RWAS), and a controller for monitoring and implementing the preferred control strategy. The steering system of the present invention operates normally in a steer-by-wire mode. In each of the EPAS mode and manual mode, the controller causes a clutch mechanism to engage, thus creating a mechanical linkage between portions of the DIS and the RWAS. In the EPAS mode, one of the road wheel actuator or the reaction torque generator is available to assist in the steering operation. Alternatively, in the manual mode, both the DIS and the RWAS are deactivated and the vehicle is steerable through entirely mechanical means.

Alternatively, in the manual mode, both the DIS and the FRWAS are deactivated and the vehicle is steerable through mechanical means along with the rear wheel assisted steering.

    • The present invention includes a system and a method for generating steering reaction torque in a steer-by-wire steering system. The system includes a manually steerable member; a feedback generator; a vehicle speed sensor; a steering position sensor; and a steering actuator load sensor. A control unit calculates a set of blended reaction torque values by receiving input signals from the steering position sensor and the steering actuator load sensor. The control unit operates on the input signals and computing a set of reaction torque values, and blending the reaction torque values into set of blended reaction torque values. The set of reaction torque equations comprises a plurality of non-linear functions that is adapted for real-time, continuous operation upon the input signals from the sensors. The set of blended reaction torque values is speed-sensitized based on vehicle speed and transmitted to the feedback generator to generate steering feel in the manually steerable member.

    • A mechanical clutch coupling back-up system for use with a steer-by-wire arrangement in a vehicle is disclosed. The system includes an input shaft, an output shaft, a clutch assembly, and an actuator assembly. In the event of vehicle power failure, the actuator assembly permits the clutch assembly to provide a mechanical coupling of the input shaft and the output shaft thereby allowing the operator to drive the vehicle without the steer-by-wire system. The actuator assembly includes an actuator and the clutch assembly includes a movable clutch collar which is movable between a disengaged position when vehicle power is present and an engaged position when vehicle power is absent.
