    • Improved bacterial secretion signals derived from pelB and ompA are provided. The improved variants enhance bacterial membrane secretion are thus useful for production of proteins secreted from bacteria including proteins displayed on filamentous phage particles, and, in particular, proteins requiring oxidative formation of covalent bonds, such as disulfide bonds within or between polypeptide chains in order to form a correctly folded and functional protein structure. Described herein are methods for the multivalent display of complex dimeric proteins on the surface of a bacteriophage particle and combinatorial synthetic libraries of such proteins displayed as a fusion polypeptide with filamentous phage pIX coat protein. Heterodimeric or more complex interchain bonded structures may also be displayed using the method of the invention.

    • A liquid crystal device includes carbon nanotube-doped liquid crystal materials that have a fast switching mode. The liquid crystals may be nematic liquid crystals contained in an optically controlled birefringence cell, with a small amount of nanotubes relative to the liquid crystals. The cell may operate between an optical bend state and homeotropic state, where the liquid crystals aligning in a bend state in response to low voltage and transform to a homeotropic state in response to high voltage. The cell may capable of a large change in effective birefringence, or variable effective birefringence enabling self-compensated optical retardation. The liquid crystals may be included with an electro-optical film, which may be formed with polymer encapsulated liquid crystals with the inclusion of at least a small amount of nanotubes sufficient to induce homogeneous liquid crystal dispersion. The electro-optical film may be fabricated by lamination or otherwise onto a substrate.

    • An improved logistics planning method and system for recommending optimal order quantities and timing, choice of vendor locations and storage locations, and transportation modes, for individual items and for product families. The system is designed for use in cooperation with the computer having memory and incorporates item, customer, supplier, and routing information databases. In operation, the item, customer and supplier databases are accessed in order to provide customer and warehouse demand forecasts. The routing and customer databases are similarly accessed to provide transportation cost forecasts necessary to determine optimized routing modes for selected items, customers and suppliers. The demand and transportation costs are processed in accordance with a dynamic programming model to determine stock and non-stock order/shipment solutions for the selected items and customers, including optimized supplier and routing selection, order timing and quantity.
