    • The present process causes selective removal of a predetermined anionic or cationic constituent from a mixture containing a plurality of constituents by contacting the mixture with an extraction agent so as to remove the desired constituent from the mixture, and if desired eluting the constituent from the extraction agent, thus recovering the extracting agent for further use. The extraction agent has the general formulaRY [(XO).sub.n --X] YR'wherein X is a group (CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2) or (CH.sub.2 --CHR.sup.1) where R.sup.1 is alkyl, aryl or a non-interfering functional substituent, n is an integer between 2 and 100 which defines the molecular weight of the glycol or glycol derivative, and wherein R and R', which may be identical or different, each designates:(a) R and R' are hydrocarbon groups selected from alkyl, aryl and aralkyl;(b) R and R' are as defined in (a), one at least of R and R' being a group ##STR1## WHEREIN R.sub.a is a non-interfering substitutent; R.sub.b is --H, --OH, --COR.sub.d, CR.sub.d NOH, --NO.sub.2 m --COOH, halogen or a non-interfering substituent,R.sub.c is --OH or --SH,R.sub.d is --H, alkyl, aralkyl(c) R and R' are [X'], X' being a group ##STR2## (D) R and R' designate a polymeric backbone or a group as defined under (a), (b) or (c), above at least one of R and R' being a polymeric backbone, and Y is O or --NH.

    • Novel polyfunctional compounds and polymers are disclosed of the general formula ##STR1## wherein Q designates -X' or -X-.epsilon.-R; where X' designates ##STR2## where .alpha. is --OH, or --SH;.beta. is --OH, --SH, --NH.sub.2, --NO.sub.2, --CO--R.sub.2, --R.sub.2 C.dbd.N--OH, --COOH, -hal, alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl; halogen being chlorine or bromine;.gamma. is a non-interfering substituent;where .beta. and .gamma. may form together a hydrocarbyl ring system;where .delta. is --(CH.sub.2).sub.n -- or --SO.sub.2 --;where X is --O--, --S--, --NH--, --N.sup.+ R.sub.2 R.sub.3 Cl.sup.- or --P--;where.epsilon. is --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --, --SO.sub.2 --, --NH-- or --CH.sub.2 (O-CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2).sub.n --; ##STR3## wherein the upwardly directed bonds are connected to the R polymer molecule and the downwardly directed bonds are connected to .delta. groups;n is an integer of from 1 to 15 or zero;R is a polymeric backbone, alkyl or aralkyl; andR.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 which may be identical or different, each designates hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl. These compounds are useful as ion-exchange agents, extractants, biocides, flameproofing agents, fire retardants, metal polishing agents and rust inhibitors. Metals may be selectively extracted from solution thereof by means of these compounds and polymers.

    • A process for producing reagents useful in organic synthesis, of the general formula ##SPC1##WhereinZ designates the ##EQU1## part of a polymeric backbone of a polymer like polystyrene, a copolymer comprising polystyrene and a comonomer like divinylbenzene, butadiene, and other copolymers comprising styrene, or wherein Z designates the aliphatic moiety of a long-chain aralkyl compound having a terminal phenyl moiety;n is an integer from 1 to 8, inclusive;R designates oxygen or sulfur;X designates nitro, carbonyl, carboxyl, cyano-carbalkoxy or a carboxamido group which may be substituted on the nitrogen atom, or a halogen atom, or alkyl, unsaturated alkyl, aralkyl;RH and X together designate hydroxytriazole; which comprises reacting a compound of the general formula ##SPC2##Wherein Y designates --Cl, --Br, or --OH and X and R are as defined above, with a polystyrene polymer or with a copolymer as defined above, or with a long-chain araliphatic compound as defined above, in a Friedel-Crafts reaction. According to a preferred embodiment copolymers of polystyrene and divinylbenzene are used. The invention also relates to the novel products obtained by the above reaction.
