    • An electric flossing apparatus comprising a flossing head which is detachably connected to a handle containing a reciprocating drive unit, a non-powered second handle to allow for the increased controllability of two-handed powered flossing and a disposable floss assembly that can be easily be attached to or released from the flossing head and handle. The floss is releasably attached to the flossing head in a manner that allows reciprocating motion to be imparted along the length of the floss no matter which direction that the floss exits the end of the flossing head or the shape of the path it takes. By using both hands for flossing the floss may be pulled straight and tensioned to facilitate insertion between tightly spaced teeth and then wrapped around a tooth to facilitate cleaning of the front, sides, and back of each tooth above, near, or just below the gum line. The reciprocating motion is imparted to the floss whenever the floss is tensioned. The intensity of the motion is then controlled by the amount of tension and the “rigidity” of the users grip on the two handles. The drive unit handle assembly may be from an inexpensive commercially available electric toothbrush such as a Crest Spinbrush™.

    • A separable connector assembly includes a connecting member having a threaded end, and a hollow housing having a cylindrical wall that contains a body rotatably mounted therein. This body is threadably engageable with the threaded end of the connecting member. A first mechanism releasably restrains the body from rotating, and a second mechanism is included for winding a spring about the cylindrical wall of the housing. A third mechanism is included for releasing the spring. A fourth mechanism is included for restraining the threaded end from rotating. A fifth mechanism is included for applying a selected tensile load. When the load is applied, a thread geometry of the connecting member causes the load to be resolved as a torque applied to the body sufficient to cause the body to rotate enabling the connecting member to translate out of engagement with the body and subsequently separate from the body.

    • An improved truss is disclosed that is deployable from a folded, or stowed position to an extended, or deployed position. The truss design facilitates compact storage and is particularly apt for space craft applications. In one aspect of the invention, a truss assembly is provided that includes at least three interconnected truss member sets, each of the truss member sets including first and second truss members that are pivotably interconnected, wherein the truss member sets combinatively define a polygonal structure in the deployed position. The first and second truss members of at least one of the truss member sets are pivotably interconnected to fold inwardly when in the folded position, and the first and second truss members of a second of the truss member sets are pivotably interconnected to fold outwardly when in the folded position. Inboard and outboard supports may be provided at each end of the truss assembly for supportable mounting within a bay of a spacecraft, and for supportably receiving instrumentation and/or additional truss assemblies thereupon, respectively.

    • An improved hinge assembly is disclosed that is particularly apt for use with deployable trusses utilized on satellites and other spacecraft. In one arrangement, the inventive hinge assembly comprises a tapered roller bearing assembly having tapered rollers angled towards a hinge axis, and a needle roller thrust bearing assembly positioned radially about at least a portion of the tapered roller bearing assembly to yield a compact and lightweight bearing arrangement, while providing satisfactory radial and axial loading bearing characteristics. An axial preload assembly may also be employed with the roller bearing assemblies in the invention to yield enhanced hinge stiffness and repeatability benefits. Such characteristics are of particular importance with deployable spacecraft truss assemblies for supporting instrumentation during orbit. An additional needle roller bearing assembly may be included at an axially spaced position from the tapered roller bearing assembly to provide overload protection (e.g., for ground-based handling and on-orbit acceleration/deceleration), and thereby allowing for a reduction in the size/weight of the primary tapered roller and needle roller thrust bearing assemblies.

    • A method and apparatus for separably connecting a first surface to a second surface. The apparatus includes a connecting member provided with a threaded end. A rotatable body threadably engagable with the threaded end is rotatably supported against the first surface for rotation about the threaded end to separably connect the connecting member. The rotatably supported body and the connecting member are restrained from rotation. The connecting member and rotatably supported body further have a selected matching thread geometry such that a tensile load applied to the member when connected with the rotatably supported body is resolved as a torque applied to the rotatably supported body sufficient to urge the body to rotate. When the rotatably supported body is released and allowed to rotate, the threaded member translates and threadably disengages the rotatably supported body to separate the connection. The mass moment of inertia of the rotatably supported body and the thread geometry are selected such that preferably over ninety percent of the strain energy not dissipated as heat due to friction is converted into rotational kinetic energy of the rotating body and less than ten percent is converted into translational kinetic energy of the connecting member.

A locking device is mounted on the second structural member in proximity to the edge thereof, movable from a locked position securing the male portion to the female portion to a second position unlocking the male portion from the female portion. An actuation device is provided for sequentially moving the locking device of each latch from the first position to the second position, unlocking the male portions from the female portions of the plurality of latches.
