    • A device (41) for positioning a joinery fastener (74) in a joinery member (33) for later use in forming a joinery assembly. The fastener positioning device (41) includes a feed magazine (82) formed for feeding joinery fasteners (74) to a gripping apparatus (83). The gripping apparatus (83) is positioned to receive the fasteners (74) and is further adapted to releasably grip individual fasteners (74) at a position (103) below the fastener head (86) to hold the fasteners (74) in a known and controlled, indexed relation to the gripping apparatus (83). The gripping apparatus is movable between a fastener gripping position to a fastener placement position while the pointed end (88) of the fastener (74) remains in indexed relation, and a placement arm (92) is formed to urge the fastener (74) from the gripping apparatus (83) and into interference fit with the joinery member (33). A joinery member (33) having a fastener (74) mounted in interference fit with a bore (68) therein is also disclosed, as is a preferred form of pocket screw fastener (74), a fastener-receiving bore (68) with an elongated transverse cross section and a process for automatically positioning fasteners (74) in joinery members (33) for later joining to another member.

    • A method and apparatus for separably connecting a first surface to a second surface. The apparatus includes a connecting member provided with a threaded end. A rotatable body threadably engagable with the threaded end is rotatably supported against the first surface for rotation about the threaded end to separably connect the connecting member. The rotatably supported body and the connecting member are restrained from rotation. The connecting member and rotatably supported body further have a selected matching thread geometry such that a tensile load applied to the member when connected with the rotatably supported body is resolved as a torque applied to the rotatably supported body sufficient to urge the body to rotate. When the rotatably supported body is released and allowed to rotate, the threaded member translates and threadably disengages the rotatably supported body to separate the connection. The mass moment of inertia of the rotatably supported body and the thread geometry are selected such that preferably over ninety percent of the strain energy not dissipated as heat due to friction is converted into rotational kinetic energy of the rotating body and less than ten percent is converted into translational kinetic energy of the connecting member.

The threads (5, 6/17, 18) in the torque-transmitting threaded connection are threaded in the opposite direction compared with the working threads (4).

    • The invention is a screw and nut assembly having a particular thread configuration. The externally threaded spindle has both a spiral threaded portion and a spiral non-threaded portion which separates the convolutions of the threaded portion. The threaded portion includes a plurality of individual threads, each individual thread extending only over a part of the periphery of the spindle body. The nut member also includes a spiral threaded portion and a spiral non threaded portion which nut portions match the respective portions of the spindle. Because of this arrangement, the nut may be rapidly moved along the spindle body when their respective non-threaded portion are engaged. Thereafter, the nut may be turned so as to engage its threaded portion with the threaded portion of the spindle.
