The outer filter element typically functions as a coalescing element and the inner element typically functions as a particulate filter element. The disclosed filter cartridges may be structured for separating water from a hydrocarbon-based liquid fuel as the fuel moves through the cartridge from outside to inside.

Electrical and/or thermal conductors are wound with filter media sheets into a filter roll and/or conductors are provided at axial ends of the filter roll and/or microwave radiation is used for localized hot zone heating. Regeneration is provided at lateral slices of the filter roll lying in a plane extending transversely and radially relative to the filter roll axis.

Exhaust flows axially (42) through the exhaust filter element between first and second distally opposite sides (44 and 46) of the exhaust filter element, the first side facing the first end of the housing, the second side facing the second end of the housing, exhaust flowing axially through the exhaust filter element in one axial direction (42) and flowing through the transfer tube and cut-out in the opposite axial direction (48).
