    • Provided is a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine which controls the internal combustion engine in such a manner as to prevent excessive overshoot of an actual phase angle at a time of phase angle feedback control. The control apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes: a unit for detecting an actual phase angle of a camshaft based on a crank angle signal and a cam angle signal; a unit for setting a target phase angle of the camshaft based on an operational state; and a unit for performing phase angle feedback control calculation such that the actual phase angle coincides with the target phase angle, to calculate an amount of operation for the hydraulic pressure control solenoid valve, in which: the phase angle feedback control calculation is started for a first time after a KEY is turned ON with an initial value of an integral term set to a predetermined value; the phase angle feedback control calculation is performed using a control gain obtained by multiplying a control gain at a time of normal control when a control difference is equal to or larger than a preset value during the phase angle feedback control; and the phase angle feedback control calculation is performed using the control gain at the time of normal control when the control difference is smaller than the preset value during the phase angle feedback control.

    • A valve timing control system for an internal combustion engine is provided, which includes: a crank angle sensor detecting a crank angle corresponding to an internal combustion engine crank shaft rotational angle; an actuator relatively modifying phases of a cam angle with the crank angle; a cam angle sensor detecting the cam angle modified by the actuator; an oil control valve driving the actuator; a target value detection unit calculating a target value according to the internal combustion engine operation state; a cam angle control unit controlling the detected cam angle to coincide with the calculated target value; a learning unit learning a control signal to the oil control valve when the cam angle substantially coincides with the target value; and a failure detection unit detecting failure of the actuator. The failure detection unit modifies a failure detection condition according to whether learning is performed in the learning unit.

    • Exhaust gas cleaner system for an automotive internal combustion engine includes an air introduction pipe 8 for introducing secondary air, heated initially by a heater 23, to the catalytic converter unit 7 mounted on the exhaust pipe 3. The ignition timings of the engine is retarded at least during the time when the secondary air is heated by the heater 23. Alternatively, the retardation of the ignition timings may be terminated before the introduction of the heated secondary air is terminated.Where two first and second catalytic converter units 7a and 7b are provided, secondary air distributed by a change-over valve 10a is heated separately by heaters 23b and 23c.To reduce the burden imposed on the engine, the generation of power by the AC generator 28 may be suspended when either the flow control valve 10b or the heater 23 is operated.
