    • An alignment guide for use in femoral head surgery. The guide includes a support arm and a cannulated rod supported by, and adjustable with respect to, the support arm. The guide also includes two jaws. The jaws include a superior jaw and an inferior jaw. Each jaw has a proximal end connected to the support arm and a distal end for clamping to the neck of the femur in use. At least one of the jaws is movable from a first open position to a second clamping position. A toothed block is located on the inferior jaw as a biting element on the inferior jaw to improve, in use, the clamping of the jaw with the neck of the femur.

    • A tibial prosthesis has a metal tray component (1) comprising a transverse member (3) with a peripheral upstanding rim (6) and a projecting stem (4). The upstanding rim (6) includes a posterior rim portion with an undercut lip forming a pair of recesses (7, 8) and an anterior rim portion with an open angled posterior surface portion (9) and a posteriorly projecting barbed portion (10). The prosthesis also includes a tibia insert (2) made of a plastics material which fits on the tibial implant (1) within the upstanding rim (6) and has on a posterior portion thereof a shaped contour (14, 15) adapted in use to fit snugly under the undercut lip and on an anterior portion thereof an anterior surface (13) having a taper angle substantially corresponding to the angle of the open angled posterior surface portion.

    • A catheter placement unit comprises a catheter having an axial bore, a catheter hub at one end of the catheter, an introducing needle having a pointed tip for introducing the catheter into a desired position in a patient's body, and a needle hub on the needle remote from the tip for mounting the needle so that it extends through the catheter bore for introduction of the catheter into the patient's body and so that it can subsequently be withdrawn from the catheter bore leaving the catheter in position in the patient's body. The unit includes a needle tip protector on the needle for shielding the needle tip when the needle has been withdrawn from the catheter bore. The needle tip protector includes a locking device which is initially in an unlocked position permitting withdrawal of the needle from the catheter bore but which is arranged to be placed in a locked position, in which the locking device engages the outer surface of the needle, by withdrawal of the needle from the catheter bore so as to lock the needle tip protector on the needle in the shielding position. The locking device retains the catheter hub on the needle when the locking device is in the unlocked position and releases the catheter hub from the needle when the locking device is in the locked position. Separation of the catheter from the needle is therefore prevented until the needle has been withdrawn from the catheter bore to trigger shielding of the needle tip.

    • A fail-safe attachment is provided for coupling an exoskeletal prosthesis to a patient limb having a bone anchored mounting post with an external fixation structure. The fail-safe attachment comprises a first component adapted for connection to the fixation structure, and a second component adapted for connection to the prosthesis. A safety release mechanism is provided normally retaining the prosthesis in a rigid substantially motion-free interconnected relation to the fixation structure, said safety release mechanism responding to a force overload condition to permit relative movement between the prosthesis and the fixation structure. The safety release mechanism comprises a bending force release mechanism responsive to a bending force overload condition to permit the separation of the second component relative to said first component. The bending force release mechanism comprises a plurality of spring loaded jaws adapted to engage a complementary portion of the other component, the jaws being pivotable in an over-centre spring configuration between a first position in which they engage the complementary portion to secure the first and second components one to the other, and a second position in which the first and second components are able to separate.
