A method of implanting an indwelling urethral catheter from the sets involves first determining a patient's interballoon urethral segment length, from his bladder to his bulbous urethra immediately downstream of what remains of his prostate gland. A urethral sizing catheter having a balloon spacing corresponding to the interballoon urethral segment length is inserted in the patient to determine the clinical length of the patient's urethral tract from his bladder to his penile meatus. A male indwelling urethral catheter is then chosen from the sets having a balloon spacing corresponding to the patient's interballoon urethral segment length and the clinical length determined with the urethral sizing catheter. The urethral sizing catheter can be used for filling and voiding the bladder.

    • A pole clamp assembly (10), and a method of using same, involves two jaws (14, 16) mounted on a base frame, or housing, (12) with a first (14) of the jaws being movable on the frame along two parallel curved tracks between closed and open positions and a selectively-actuatable biasing mechanism (18) comprising an elastic or spring member (38, 102) attached between the movable jaw (14) and a reel or hub (36, 36'). By selectively moving the hub between open and closed positions, the biasing mechanism moves the jaw between the closed and open positions, but if the jaw is held in the closed position, for example, which it will be if the clamp is engaged with a pole, the biasing mechanism flexes when the hub is moved to the open position to allow the movable jaw to remain in the closed position. When the jaw is no longer held in the closed position it snaps to the open position under the influence of the biasing mechanism. Additionally, a spring loaded lock (100) which holds the movable jaw in the open position can be automatically actuated by placing a member to be clamped between the two jaws to automatically release the movable jaw, thereby allowing it to snap to the closed position under the influence of the biasing mechanism.

A septum (50) formed of intersecting semi-circular-in-cross-section baffles joins the adjacent outer ends of the irrigation and aspiration check valve cylinders so as to allow full fluid streams flowing from these outer ends to flow together at an angle. An oblong-in-cross-section, funnel-shaped, common exchange tube (22) is attached to the housing surrounding ends of both the irrigation and aspiration check valve cylinders and the septum. Inlet and outlet ports (42 and 44) are respectively positioned on the sides of the irrigation and aspiration cylinders with appropriate check valves located therein for coupling respectively to supply and waste containers (12, 16). When either of the plungers is fully inserted into its respective cylinder, a seal (80) on the end thereof covers the respective inlet or outlet port, thereby making that cylinder inoperative so as to avoid undesired fluid mixing between cylinders.

    • An indwelling urethral catheter (10) includes a flexible catheter drainage shaft (18) defining a drainage canal with a valve (32) mounted therein. The catheter is mounted in a urethral canal by means of a bladder-located Foley-type balloon (22) and an inflatable balloon lead shaft (24) which extends along the catheter drainage shaft. The valve (32) is normally biased to a closed position, but is actuatable to an open position by external hand manipulation of a penis in which the catheter is implanted. The catheter (10) also includes a discardable sleeve (12) which is severably attached to the distal end of the catheter (10), on the proximal side of the balloon (22). After insertion into the urethra, the balloon (22), and its lead shaft (24) are inflated through a "basketball" type contraction valve (44). Gentle traction is then applied axially to a catheter sleeve head (46) to sever the sleeve from the remainder of the catheter (10) so that it may be withdrawn from the urethra and discarded, leaving the remainder of the catheter (10) in a position whereby the most proximal end does not extend to the penile meatus.
