    • The present invention provides a confocal scanning microscope whereby fluorescence observations can be made using a plurality of types of excitation light without the need for attaching and detaching a light source to and from the optical fiber. The confocal scanning microscope comprises: a light source unit for emitting excitation light that excites a sample; a scanner unit for scanning the sample with the excitation light; and an imaging camera for capturing an image of the sample by receiving fluorescent light emitted from the sample; the light source unit having a plurality of light sources for emitting laser light with different wavelengths and a multicore optical fiber cable for transmitting light from the plurality of light sources, one end of the multicore optical fiber cable being separated into a plurality of optical fibers, and light from each of the plurality of light sources being input to one end of each of the separate optical fibers.

    • An ultrasonic diagnostic method and apparatus are provided for probing the condition in a tissue of a living body by projecting an ultrasonic beam onto the living body from a vibrator array transducer probe consisting of a plurality of tiny ultrasonic vibrators. The apparatus executes two scanning actions, of which one is a normal linear scanning that drives the ultrasonic vibrators sequentially in the manner to cause a sequential parallel shift of the ultrasonic beam substantially perpendicular to the vibrator array, and the other of which is an inclined linear scanning that drives the ultrasonic vibrators at individually different timings while sequentially shifting the driven vibrators in the manner to cause sequential parallel shift of the ultrasonic beam having an angle of inclination against the vibrator array. The images obtained through the normal linear scanning and the inclined linear scanning are combined to form a composite high-resolution image.

    • A method for purifying matter contaminated with a halogenated organic compound is disclosed. The method includes the step of adding a reducing agent and a nutritional source for a heterotrophic anaerobic microorganism to the contaminated matter. The reducing agent is reduced iron, cast iron, iron-silicon alloy and so on, or a water soluble compound. A combination of chemical reactions with microorganisms allows to decompose the halogenated organic compound. The nutritional source including an organic carbon and 20 to 50 percent by weight of an oxidized form of nitrogen is added, thereby preventing by products of the decomposition such as generation of noxious gases and decoloration of soil. A method includes the steps of mixing a reducing agent and a nutritional liquid with the contaminated matter, wherein the mixing step including a step of adjusting the contaminated matter at pH ranging from 4.5 to 9.0; and keeping the mixture in a condition that air hardly penetrates through a matrix, thereby allowing to uniformly mix a large amount of the contaminated matter.
