    • A vortex-shedding flow-sensing instrument comprising a flat-faced vortex-generating plate integral with a downstream sensor-bar having flat sides set back laterally with respect to the rows of vortices shed from the edges of the vortex-generating plate. The side surfaces of the plate are tapered inwardly at a moderate angle, and extend down a short distance to rear surfaces at right angles with respect to the direction of fluid flow. The downstream end of the sensor bar comprises a tail piece the side surfaces of which are tapered inwardly at a moderate angle, and extend downstream a short distance to a rear surface perpendicular to the direction of fluid flow.The sensor bar carries on oil-filled capsule having as side walls a pair of flexible diaphragms effectively in the plane of the sensor-bar side surfaces. These diaphragms transmit alternating vortex pressure pulses interiorly of the capsule to a sensing element in the form of a ceramic disc having piezo-electric properties. The resulting alternating voltage signal developed by this element is coupled through lead wires to an amplifier arranged to produce a flow signal suitable for transmission over relatively long distances.

    • Apparatus and process for drying coated surfaces, e.g. inked surfaces, with improved efficiency. The apparatus comprises an air-directing baffle which has vortex-inducing means, e.g. grooves or slots therein. The slots are arranged substantially perpendicular to the general direction of flow of drying gas through a drying zone formed by the baffle and the surface being dried. The vortices provide both (1) improved drying efficiency at the interface between coated surface and drying gas and (2) effective dissipation of kinetic energy from the drying gas as it traverses the drying zone. Less energy is required to exhaust spent drying gas from the drying zone while effectively preventing the gas from escaping into the environment. In dual-drier systems, fed by centrally located air nozzles, means is provided to avoid an asperating effect which tends to suck the web toward the apparatus. In systems to be used with flat webs and especially unsupported flat webs, the air directing baffle means are best made approximately parallel with said flat web.

    • A liquid filled differential pressure transmitter includes a metallic measurement diaphragm within a pressure chamber and a pair of isolation diaphragms sealing the chamber from the process fluid which serve to transmit the applied pressure signals to the measurement diaphragm. The isolation diaphragms bottom against mating back-up surfaces to limit deflection of the diaphragm during overrange pressure conditions. An electrically conductive liquid fills the chamber so that measurable electrical resistances are established through the liquid between the measurement diaphragm and a pair of electrodes adjacent thereto formed on opposite walls of the chamber. As the measurement diaphragm deflects in response to applied pressure signals, the electrical resistance between the diaphragm and each of the electrodes changes providing an output signal which is a function of the applied differential pressure.
