    • The universal dictation input apparatus and method disclosed employs multiple wireless dictation devices (“WDD”) and base stations each of which include a 900 MHz radio for communicating with one another over selected radio frequency (“RF”) channel pairs to conduct dictation sessions on centralized dictation systems (“CDSs”). Each base station is uniquely assigned a single channel pair. The WDDs are programmed with code representing the exclusive channels of a select number of base stations. When a user takes a WDD off-hook, a WDD sequentially and cyclically scans for carrier transmitted by authorized base stations until an idle base station is identified and linked to over the authorized channel. The user of a WDD must be authorized to conduct dictation sessions on one or more CDSs. To this end the WDDs includes a dialing address keypad to address authorized CDSs. The CDSs are third party systems addressed from a WDD by DTMF dialing digits. Dictation sessions are conducted by sending dictation commands, for example “record” and “play” in the form of DTMF digits to the CDSs. The WDDs send data as ASCII codes in packets to a base station. The transmitted data includes dialing digits and system commands for the base station. The WDDs generate data from the dialing keypad, programmable keys customized to send frequently used dictation commands to a CDS and to provide other specialized features and a barcode reader. Specific setup data is downloaded to a base station to enable it to execute commands and dialing, digits unique to CDS of different vendors and to prepare for receipt of verbal dictation commands. A base station includes a voice recognition algorithm to translate verbal commands spoken at a WDD, such as “record” and “play,” into codes forwarded to a CDS as DTMF digits.

    • This invention provides methods for nucleic acid analysis. A closed complex of nucleic acid template, nucleotide and polymerase can be formed during polymerase reaction, absent divalent metal ion. This is used to trap the labeled nucleotide complementary to the next template nucleotide in the closed complex. Detection of the label allows determination of the identity of this next correct nucleotide. Identification can be either in place, as part of the complex, or as the dye is eluted from the complex when the reaction cycle is completed by the addition of divalent metal ion. In this way, sequential nucleotides of a DNA can be identified, effectively determining the DNA sequence. This method can be applied to nucleic acid single molecules or to collections of identical or nearly identical sequence such as PCR products or clones. Multiple templates can be sequenced in parallel, particularly if they are immobilized on a solid support.

    • A contact-sensitive display screen panel of a craft unit is protected by a pivotable lid. The lid is rotatably supported by lid pivot attachments that enable the lid to be pivoted between closed and open positions, and to be stably locked as a support member in its fully extended attitude. Lid pin elements extend from opposite ends of a lid pin support element and engage left side and right side hinge assemblies. Each lid pin element has a tab element translatable along the underside of the lid. Each lid pin element is biased by a compression spring into engagement with a capturing slot in an interior bore of a post of a hinge arm element of a respective one of hinge assemblies. To rotate the lid from its open position, to its fully extended position, the craftsperson translate the tab elements against the biasing of compression springs, so that the lid pin element becomes unlocked from a slot in the interior bore of the hinge arm element of a respective hinge assembly. Once rotated to its fully extended position, finger pressure against the tab elements is released and the tab elements are allowed to again be biased by the compression springs, locking the reduced thickness portions of the lid pin elements in slots of the interior bores of the hinge arm elements of the hinge assemblies, so that the lid will be stably retained as a support element in its fully extended position.

    • An instrument housing having an improved means for storing a roll of paper of selected width and maximum diameter for use by a printer in which the housing has a rectangular opening in the top adjacent the housing front and a rectangular opening in the front forward of and below the opening in the top. A paper trough is positioned within the instrument housing below the top opening and rearwardly of the front opening, the trough having an open top and having opposed parallel sides and a rearward wall and a bottom wall which merge into a quarter circular integral intersection, the radius of curvature of the intersection being about one-half of the maximum diameter of the paper roll for which the trough is dimensioned. A trough gate forms a front wall, the trough gate having a downwardly extending inner surface curved at the lower portion thereof toward the trough back wall at a radius of curvature substantially equal to that of the radius of curvature of the intersection of the trough rearward and bottom walls, and the trough gate having a bottom wall spaced slightly above the trough bottom wall providing a slot therebetween whereby when a roll of paper is positioned within the trough the free end of the paper may exit the trough through the slot. An electrically actuated printer mechanism is positioned in the housing forward of the trough gate, the printer having means to receive the paper for pulling paper through the slot as the printer functions.
