    • The present invention eliminates the need to stop the operation of a line even when trouble arises before, during, or after an operation of joining metal blocks in hot rolling. According to a specific solving means of the present invention, when a succeeding metal block is to be subjected to hot finish rolling in succession to a preceding metal block after the leading end of the succeeding metal block is joined to a tail end 10B of the preceding metal block on the inlet side of a finish rolling mill 26, it is determined before and after joining whether or not endless rolling is impossible. When it is impossible, joining is aborted, and the succeeding metal block 12 is temporarily stopped, is fed again after the tail end 10B of the preceding metal block moves out of the finish rolling mill 26, and is finish-rolled under the conditions set for batch rolling. When joining was not performed successfully, a joint 11 is cut between a joining unit and the finish rolling mill 26, and the rolled material is bitten by the finish rolling mill set for batch rolling.

    • A guiding method and apparatus are presented for preventing the generation of lateral curving in a rolled slab produced in a roughing mill train, consisting of an edging mill and a horizontal mill in tandem, for example. The apparatus basically includes a first side guide placed upstream at the entrance to the edging mill, a second side guide placed downstream at the exit of the horizontal mill and a third side guide placed between the edging mill and the horizontal mill. The first side guide at the entrance to the edging mill synchronously closes the separation distance of the guide components upon the entry of the rolled slab into the first side guide, leaving a narrow space between the guide and the rolled slab. The third side guide closes the separation spacing based on slab exit timing representing the instant the tail end of the rolled slab passes through the edging mill. The second side guide assumes a narrow separation distance when the head end of the rolled slab enters therebetween. The restraining force provided by the narrow separation distance prevents lateral shifting to occur during the rolling process thereby reducing snaking of the rolled slab.

    • Herein disclosed is an endless hot rolling method using a hot strip mill substantially composed of a roughing mill and a finishing mill having a roll bender and a roll shifter to continuously roll sequentially joined different rolling materials. The method comprises the steps of: calculating a roll shift range in an axial direction for each rolling material so as to provide a desired crown; determining a rolling sequence so as to obtain a common roll shift range for each pair of neighboring rolling materials; connecting a preceding material at the tail end thereof to the head end of the succeeding material, between the roughing mill and the finishing mill; shifting the rolls during transition from the preceding material to the succeeding material so that the roll position corresponding to the joint of the two materials is within a common roll shift range for the materials; and changing the roll bending load in accordance with the roll shift pattern so as to achieve the desired crown of each material. If the width of a common roll shift range for all the materials is at least 50% of the width of the individual roll shift ranges, rolling can be continuously performed without shifting in an axial direction rolls.
