    • An inspection machine for transilluminatable bottles inspects the sidewalls of bottles by transmitting a diffused beam of light through the sidewall and using a plurality of mirrors appropriately arranged for detecting or recording the images emergent from the bottle in different directions in the same image recording camera. The arrangement requires at least two separate beam paths and mirrors in each path directing the bottle emergent beams to the camera while the bottles are being conveyed through a position in which they are illuminated. In an improved arrangement, there is a separate cooperating series of beam deflecting mirrors which generate at least three independent beam paths that impinge from different directions on the sidewall of the bottle being inspected. The recording device is preferably a camera having a charge coupled device image plate.

    • Bottles to be cleaned are fed in succession to an infeed starwheel from which they are transferred to a rotor on which there are circumferentially spaced apart cam operated bottle inverting devices that grip the bottles and invert them with their mouths over a nozzle that injects cleaning fluid into them. The gripping devices have on them gripper fingers which are V-shaped and are molded, respectively, of a resilient and deflectable synthetic resin such as a polyamide. There is an upper gripper having finger tips spaced apart to engage the neck of a bottle and a lower gripper having finger tips or the like that grip or support the cylindrical body of the bottle.

    • A conduit system for spraying cleansing and rinsing liquids on a machine for processing containers such as bottles has vertical conduit columns arranged around the machine with liquid infeed conduits confluent with the lower end of at least some of the conduit columns and opposite ends of the infeed conduits are closed by welding to a support plate that is bolted in non-interfering locations to the legs of a machine table below the level of the bottle transporting rotor. Further support for the conduit columns is obtained with pipe arms that do not conduct liquid but have opposite ends welded to the support plate and to the conduit column, respectively. Conduit struts connect between uppers ends of the conduit columns. The conduits have a series of nozzles aimed for spraying all regions of the machine that must be cleansed and sterilized intermittently or continuously. Swingable wall sections are arranged to confine cleansing liquid to the machine area and other swingable walls serve to intersect splinters that may be propelled from bottles that are shattered by excessive air purging carbon dioxide gas pressure.

    • A glue applying device for a labeling machine equipped with a roller rotating about a vertical axis while a mass of glue is fed to one side. A glue scraper blade is mounted for swinging about a vertical axis into a position where the blade edge wipes off the mass of glue and leaves a film of glue on the roller. A lever extends radially from the blade axis. A micrometer adjustment screw is threaded through a pivoting arm for its tip to act on the lever. The screw has a turning knob in which a graduated thickness indicating dial is rotatable. A block is mounted to the arm and it has a bore through which the adjustment screw passes. There is an index mark on the block next to the dial. A compression spring in the bore holds the knob against self rotation. When the screw is turned to its limit against the lever, the dial is turned in the knob until the zero mark on the dial scale aligns with the index mark.

    • A bottle labeling machine has a turret rotating on a fixed axle. The turret has circumferentially spaced apart curved glue pallets mounted on individual pallet shafts supported in oscillatable drive members, respectively, which drive the shafts. The pallets orbit and oscillate to pick up glue from a roller, pick up a label next and deposit the label on a cylinder from which it is transferred eventually to a bottle. The drive members are externally splined axially and are each surrounded by an internally axially splined clutch member. The drive member has a smooth bore to permit it to rotate on a shaft that is driven in oscillating fashion as the turret rotates. The oscillating shaft has a transversely extending element on which there are axially projecting teeth that engage in corresponding recesses in the clutch member to effect oscillation of the pallet shaft. In response to an interruption in bottle delivery, a locking member on the turret engages the clutch member which rides off of the driving teeth to stop oscillation of the pallet when it is in a path that would clear the glue source, the label and the cylinder while the drive shaft is still controlled to oscillate but not sufficiently to reengage the teeth. As the turret rotates to the single position at about which the drive member was locked, the cam increases the oscillation amplitude to cause the teeth to reengage for driving the drive member again and no locking action will occur if there is no response resulting from an interruption in the series of bottles.

    • A compact glue heater for heating the flow of glue to a labeling machine has two spaced apart metal plates welded together at their edges and a rib running part way along the center of the space to define a U-shaped conduit between the plates. A glue inlet pipe connects to one end of the conduit and an outlet pipe connects to the other. Electric heaters composed of heat resistant insulating sheets with electrically resistive material between them interface with the outside surfaces of the respective conduit forming plates to form a heater and conduit assembly. The heater and conduit assembly is sandwiched between metal plates secured together by spacer blocks at their corners to form a unitary assembly removably supported on the spacer blocks in a cavity in a closed housing in spaced relationship to the walls of the cavity thereby inhibiting heat transfer through the housing. A current controller, mounted within a separate cavity of the housing, is governed by glue temperature and pressure sensors and a fusible element is provided for causing the controller to interrupt current to the heaters if an unsafe temperature is reached.
