    • The present invention relates to a method for returning empty packaging, particularly bottles and cans, having a bulk import, in which the empty packaging is routed out of an input chamber through a transport device, rotating the empty packaging along its longitudinal axis past a recognition unit. The transport device for carrying out the method has a plurality of rollers which are arranged transversely with respect to the direction of transport and act as carriers for the empty packaging. The empty packaging is supplied to the detection array of the recognition unit in a field array. To avoid empty packaging being conveyed on top of other empty packaging, thereby blocking the detection of the bottom empty packaging by the recognition unit, the empty packaging undergoes a brief reversal of direction of rotation before its presentation to the detection array.

    • Resin vessels 10 are conveyed on a air conveyor 2 while they are supported at a point below a flange 10b, and are conveyed into a drier 8 which is disposed within a sterile chamber 14 through an inlet wheel 24. The drier carries resilient grippers 11 including a pair of arms which are urged toward each other by a spring to hold a vessel sandwiched therebetween. A vessel is dried up while it is rotatively conveyed as gripped by the resilient grippers, and is then returned to the air conveyor 2 through an outlet wheel 26. A reject wheel 28 is disposed upstream of the outlet wheel and includes unlockable grippers 130 which grips the vessel at a point above the flange for taking out the vessel from the drier. A reject arm 46 is disposed downstream of the reject wheel and is movable into and from a conveying path of vessels within the drier. The reject arm causes a vessel which the reject wheel failed to grasp to be dropped onto a discharge chute 30. This allows a resin vessel 10 which has been deformed under heat as a result of a machine stop over an increased length of time to be rejected positively.

    • An inspection machine for transilluminatable bottles inspects the sidewalls of bottles by transmitting a diffused beam of light through the sidewall and using a plurality of mirrors appropriately arranged for detecting or recording the images emergent from the bottle in different directions in the same image recording camera. The arrangement requires at least two separate beam paths and mirrors in each path directing the bottle emergent beams to the camera while the bottles are being conveyed through a position in which they are illuminated. In an improved arrangement, there is a separate cooperating series of beam deflecting mirrors which generate at least three independent beam paths that impinge from different directions on the sidewall of the bottle being inspected.     • Apparatus for inspecting glass containers in which an indexing starwheel moves a plurality of containers in series through a plurality of positions or stations where the containers are physically and optically examined.One station, or position, is described in detail as the position where a glass container that is in a vertical position is rotated about its vertical axis by engagement of the finish thereof with a driven wheel. Rotating worm means move the bottles into and out of the handling system and serve as means to time the bottle movements. A mechanism at the exit position assists the bottles out of the starwheel. At the station where the sidewall of the bottles is to be inspected, a light source in the form of a tall housing is positioned in a vertical, annular recess of the starwheel. Additionally, the starwheel is made such that individual containers are contacted by rollers supported from the starwheel and at the sidewall inspection station the container is held in the starwheel, in engagement with the lower rollers, by a side-engaging biased roller. The manner of holding and rotating the bottle is such that a vertical sidewall section of the container is unobstructed, both from the viewpoint of outwardly directed illumination, and view by a camera positioned radially outward of the container.

    • Improvements in bottle handling apparatus whereby bottles may be firmly grasped by the neck thereof for conveying but may be easily and quickly released as desired. A pair of spaced elongated members, somewhat flexible by design, extend outward adjacently and are manipulated to clamp and retain the bottles. The elongated members are pivotally supported intermediate the ends thereof and a toggle joint mechanism is disposed to spread the rear portion of the elongated members so as to cause the forward portion thereof to grasp a bottle. A spring across the toggle mechanism drives the clamp into either the completely open or completely closed position in response to an impulse. Mechanism is provided for causing the clamp to release at one of a plurality of possible locations depending on the desired position of the bottle being conveyed.
