    • A milling machine having a horizontal slide and a vertical slide. The horizontal slide is mounted for movement between a loading station and a milling area. The vertical slide is mounted on the horizontal slide for vertical movement. A chuck is mounted on the vertical slide and has jaws for gripping a workpiece at the loading station. Milling tools in the milling area mill a workpiece held by the chuck when the horizontal slide is moved to the milling area. The milling tools include a face mill, a semi-finish end mill and a finish end mill which are arranged in a straight line along the path of movement of the chuck when the horizontal slide is moved from the loading station to the milling area. All of the milling tools are mounted in a receptacle which is capable of positioning the milling tools offset from the center line of the workpiece.

    • Apparatus for machining first and second throws on a crankshaft wherein the throws are displaced outwardly from the central axis of the shaft in angularly spaced relation to one another. The crankshaft is gripped by a collet. The collet is mounted on a spindle at a point offset radially from the spindle axis. The collet is capable of rotating from a first position in which the first throw is on the axis of spindle rotation to a second position in which the second throw is on the axis of spindle rotation. A tool is provided for cutting the throws when the collet is secured in either one of the two positions. A collet receiver is provided to open and close the collet. A housing for the collet and collet receiver is mounted on the spindle. The collet is locked in each of the two rotative positions by interengaging teeth on the collet receiver and on the housing. When the collet receiver is moved relative to the housing, the teeth become disengaged so that the collet is free to rotate. Thereafter by relatively moving the collet and collet receiver, the collet is opened to release the crankshaft.

    • A tool turret has a brake to retain the turret in an an index position. The brake has stationary and rotatable brake members, each formed with a cone-shaped braking surface and a radial or face braking surface. A tooling plate carries a plurality of cutting tools and is mounted on the rotatable brake member. When the brake members are moved toward one another, the cone-shaped braking surfaces engage and the face braking surfaces engage in an indexed position in which one of the cutting tools is brought into a position for engaging a workpiece. When the brake members are disengaged, a motor turns the rotatable brake member and the tooling plate to another indexed position. The cone-shaped braking surfaces are mounted on flexibly resilient braking elements of the brake members to enable them to flex upon initial engagement of the cone-shaped braking surfaces, so that further movement of the brake members towards one another into full engagement with the face braking surfaces is permitted. The brake member on which the tooling plate is mounted is attached to the motor rotor by a flexible section, and the stator of the motor is mounted on a flex plate to enable axial float of the motor and to compensate for any lateral or angular misalignment of the motor and brake, so that full braking engagement can be achieved.

    • An elongated relatively rigid yet resilient tool compensating bar formed from rectangular bar stock with strategically placed slots to form three basic body members, namely a stationary body member, a lower body member, and an upper body member. The stationary body member is adapted to be secured in fixed position to a suitable support. The lower body member has side portions along opposite sides of the base member, being separated from the base member by a pair of slots and integrally connected to the base member by a flexure web or neck of the bar between said slots adjacent one end of the bar. This flexure web enables the lower body member to flex laterally relative to the stationary member. The upper body member is disposed over the stationary and lower body members and is separated therefrom by a third slot. Additional slots at opposite ends of the bar form flexure webs integrally connecting the upper body member to the lower body member and enabling the upper body member to flex relative to the lower body member in a direction lenthwise of the bar.
