    • A biocompatable multi-layer article suitable for use in blood oxygenation is disclosed. The article is made up of a microporous polypropylene tube, a perm-selective, water vapor impermeable, carbon dioxide and oxygen permeable, homogeneous layer directly adhered to the polypropylene tube and active heparin linked through a covalent bond to the permselective layer. The polypropylene tube has an inside diameter from 240 to 400 .mu.m, a wall thickness from 10 to 50 .mu.m, and a porosity from 20 to 80 percent. The perm-selective layer is a polysulfone which has the structure ##STR1## where R is an alkyl group having 16 carbon atoms and n is 3,500 to 35,000. A method for producing a biocompatible multi-layer article suitable for use in blood oxygenation is also disclosed. The method involves the steps of immersing a microporous polypropylene tube which has an inside diameter from 240 to 400 .mu.m, a wall thickness from 10 to 50 .mu.m, and a porosity from 20 to 80 percent in a solution of a polysulfone which has the foregoing structure, and heating the coated polypropylene tube to a temperature that is above the softening point but below the decomposition temperature of the sulfone, e.g., in an oven heated to 70.degree.-150.degree. C.A new poly(sulfone-alpha-olefin) is also disclosed. The new poly olefin has the structure of Formula 2, below: ##STR2## where the R' groups can be the same or different, most of them are C6 to C16 alkyls, n is an integer of at least 6, preferably from 3,500 to 35,000, and some of the repeating groups have the structure of Formula 3, below: ##STR3## where R" is a bromoalkyl group having from 1 to 26 carbons, a methyl or ethyl ester of an alkyl carboxylic acid having from 1 to 26 carbons, or an alkyl aldehyde having from 1 to 26 carbons.

    • This invention relates to a method and apparatus for the rapid quantitative determination of an antigen contained in aqueous biochemical samples, for example, blood. The method comprises a series of sequentially arranged stages through which a buffered stream flows. The sample, containing an unknown concentration of the antigen, is injected into the buffered flowing stream and contacts various reagents in the sequential series of stages. An initial solubilization stage comprises an immobilized antibody on a substrate which antibody is specific to the antigen in the sample. The immobilized antibody has been reacted previously to saturation with an enzyme-antigen complex, the antigen of the complex being the same as the antigen in the sample, and the complex is reversably bound to the immobilized antibody. The antigen in the sample and buffered stream flow through the solubilization stage and a competitive equilibrium reaction takes place between the complex bound to the antibody and the antigen in the sample, resulting in the release of a quantity of the enzyme-antigen complex into the flowing stream. The complex and the stream pass into a conversion stage wherein the complex reacts with an immobilized substrate, such as starch, to produce a measurable product which is a quantitative index of the complex released in the solubilization stage. The measurable product and the stream flow to a detection stage wherein the product is reacted, quantitatively measured and related to the concentration of the antigen in the original sample.

    • The application discloses polymers and methods of making same in which a chlorine atom of a chloromethyl pendant group of a polymer such as a chloromethylated copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene is substituted with a derivative of malonic acid having a protected amino group on the alpha-carbon atom and two carboxyl groups or precursors thereof to form, via several steps, the alpha-amino acid derivative of the starting polymer. These polymers are used, for instance, as ion exchange resins, as substrates for affinity chromotography, and as a starting resin for solid peptide synthesis. The resultant polymer is also used as a starting material to make a polymer with a pendant group that is a derivative of oxazolidone-2,5-dione, substituted at the 4-position. These polymers are used, for example, as the matrix for solid phase peptide synthesis and as the starting resin for solid phase peptide degradation.
