    • The present invention relates to control of synchronous machines. A sensorless control system for an electrical machine is provided comprising a rotor and a stator having one or more phase windings for generating a rotating stator magnetic field. The current in the phase windings is monitored to determine real and imaginary components of the current vector in a rotating reference frame, from which real and imaginary components of the emf vector rotating in the rotating reference frame can also be determined. The ratio of the real and imaginary emf components is calculated, and an angular position of the rotational emf vector is estimated from this ratio. An angular error signal indicative of the deviation of the estimated angular position from a desired position in line with the real axis of the rotating reference frame is determined, and the machine is controlled such that the error signal tends towards zero.

A position sensor is provided for monitoring the rotational position of the rotor and for supplying output signals dependent on the speed of rotation of the rotor. Furthermore a control system 32 supplies control signals to the circuit 40 to control the current in the armature winding 24, 25. In order to enhance the performance at high speed, the control signals are produced in response to sensor output signals which provide an advanced indication of the rotational position of the rotor. Furthermore, in order to prevent oscillation of the rotor on start-up, the control signals supplied to the circuit 40 during an initial start-up period are each produced after a time delay as compared with the production of the control signals over subsequent cycles of rotation during acceleration of the rotor. This can be achieved with simple on/off control of armature and field switching devices, so that the control circuitry can be produced at relatively low cost.

    • A two-phase switched reluctance motor comprises a rotor without windings, a stator having windings, and an electronic control circuit for controlling the current in the windings to effect rotation of the rotor. The control circuit includes a capacitance bridge defining a floating point to which one end of each of the windings is coupled to form a resonance circuit. Switching transistors are connected to the windings and are switched in synchronism with rotation of the rotor so as to produce current pulses which are limited by the build-up of voltage at the floating point of the capacitance bridge. This ensures that the current in the windings returns naturally to zero at the end of each excitation pulse, thus providing more efficient power operation and reducing the acoustic noise of the machine.

    • A switched reluctance electrical machine system including a switched reluctance machine, a rechargeable DC energy store and principle voltage terminals connectable to an external power source. The switched reluctance machine comprises a rotor, a stator and windings wherein the windings include at least two closely-coupled coils and a power converter for controlling current flow in the windings. The power converter has first and second circuits. The first circuit contains one of the closely-coupled coils and the principle voltage terminals while the second circuit contains the other of the closely-coupled coils and the energy store. A first switching arrangement is connected in series with the coils in the first circuit and a second switching arrangement is connected in series with the coils in the second circuit. An electronic controller controls the switching arrangements so that, in a first operational mode, current flows in one direction in the coils during normal machine operation and, in a second operational mode, current flows in the coils in the opposite direction to charge the energy store from an external power source.
