    • A rotary finishing tool and a method for making the same characterized by a rolled or coiled strap of plastic material with abrasive homogeneously embedded throughout. The coiled strap is secured to the bottom interior surface of a cup element by a thin layer of liquid quick setting or instant adhesive. The strap may include transverse slits or serrations to provide the degree of flexure desired and/or to provide fracture lines. To make the tool, a longitudinally extending strap of an abrasive containing plastic material is heated and rolled along its longitudinal axis thereby forming a lightly coiled strap. A cup element is supported and the coiled strap is driven into the cup element whereby one end face of the coiled strap is driven into contact with a thin layer of the instant adhesive. Upon curing of the adhesive, the one end face is secured to the bottom interior surface of the cup element, and the opposite or outer end face becomes the working face of the tool.

    • A twisted stem helical internal abrading and finishing tool is formed from abrasive containing plastic strips having transverse offset slits along the lateral edges and a longitudinal middle unslit portion. The strips may be stacked with the longitudinal middle unslit portions aligned with the longitudinal axis of a cotter pin, one end of the stack being placed in the bight of the cotter pin. The cotter pin is twisted about its longitudinal axis to form a helical twisted stem from which the slit lateral side or edges extend forming rectangular abrasive fingers uniformly helically arranged. The end of the cotter pin opposite the bight may be inserted into the chuck of a drilling or turning machine to hold and rotate the tool about the axis of the stem.

    • A machine for finishing eccentric shafts includes a flow-through quick change arbor with axially spaced radial ports. Hollow adapter hubs are spaced along the shaft in register with the ports. Axial spacing is obtained with cylindrical spacers and discs on each side of each hub. A nut on one end of the shaft clamps stacked hubs, discs and spacers together for rotation with the shaft. Each hub supports two side-by-side finishing tools, each of which includes a ring from which the finishing material extends in a radial array. Each hub on its face includes a set of diametrically opposite bayonet slots which interfit with drive lugs on the inside of the rings. The slots extend in both circumferential directions from the axially extending entrant portions with the ends engaging the lugs for rotation in either direction while providing ease of mounting and replacement. The entrant portions on each side of the hub are aligned and connected so that a tool ring may be mounted from either side of the hub. The hub includes radial ports between the rings so that fluid may flow from the shaft through the hub and between the side-by-side tools on the hubs. The sides of the rings of the tools may be provided with indentations to facilitate this flow directly to the tool working face, which in turn provides an improved quality of finish and longer tool life.

    • An extruded plastic strip contains abrasive grains or minerals embedded homogeneously therein throughout is scored along the machine or extrusion axis direction, such scoring including elliptical or pointed perforations with the long axis or generally pointed ends aligned with the scoring and parallel to the machine or extrusion axis. The preferred plastic material is a 612 nylon, although other plastics may be employed. The material is heat workable, yet relatively stiff and can be used to form a wide variety of power driven abrasive tools. The present application also disclosed a rotary wheel type tool utilizing the perforated strip, and a method of making that tool using a gel type cyanoacrylate as an adhesive. With the strip of the present invention, rotary wheel tools as well as many other tools can economically be produced. In tool use, the strip fractures along the scoring and perforations to provide a tool having closely packed individual rectangular fingers, each with a major flat side facing the direction of rotation.

    • An adhesive bonded flexible abrasive finishing tool and method of making the same includes a cup-shape shank of plastic or metal. Flexible nylon abrasive loaded monofilaments of uniform length are formed into a cylindrical bundle. A measured amount of liquid instant cyanoacrylate adhesive is placed into the bottom of the cup portion of the shank and the bundle of monofilaments is driven as a group endwise by a pressure plate through a split funnel mounted on the lip of the cup so that one end of the bundle and thus each monofilament is driven uniformly into the adhesive which then cures rapidly. The monofilaments may preferably be straight or somewhat crimped or wavy and may vary in sectional configuration and abrasive loading. The resulting brush or finishing tool is a low cost light weight tool having improved distribution and density of filaments and a flat even face without a final trimming operation. The tool is ideally suited for automated or robotics finishing operations.

    • A honing tool characterized in one form by an elongated rectangular cup element or holder having a bottom interior surface, a bundle of closely packed relatively short discrete generally parallel abrasive containing filaments secured in the holder, and a layer of instant gel adhesive securing all of the filaments at one end face of the bundle to the bottom interior surface of the holder. To make such a honing tool, a measured bundle of uniformly closely packed nonwoven, generally parallel discrete filaments is formed. A holder is supported and a measured amount of gel adhesive is placed in the bottom interior of the holder so that a layer of such adhesive completely covers the bottom of the interior of the holder. The bundle is then promptly driven into the holder so that all of the filaments at one end of the bundle are in contact with the adhesive prior to the curing of the adhesive. The adhesive is then cured. In another form a rectangular bundle of abrasive containing strips is formed, each having a slit or scored lateral edge. The plastic strips may be formed into bundles by ultrasonic welding through the unslit or unscored root portions of each strip. The bundle is driven into the holder to be secured by the gel adhesive in the same manner. In either form there is produced a rectangular or oblong honing tool which is provided with relatively short fingers closely packed not only within the holder but also at the working face. The improved tool has a somewhat soft or flexible working face as compared to a conventional honing stone or clad steel tool and will not contaminate the surface being honed. The tool provides an improved surface topography whether used as a finish hone or in a tertiary operation.

    • A plastic strap or tape having granular abrasive embedded homogeneously throughout is cut, shaped and formed into a variety of abrasive finishing tools. The plastic working element is preferably rather stiff 6/12 nylon and contains about 30 to 45% by weight of abrasive material. The strap or tape is formed by extrusion of such non-elastomeric plastic through a ceramic die opening and as extruded has an indefinite length in the machine direction, a controlled uniform thickness, and a width which is approximately 5 to 50 times or more the thickness. A preferred width to thickness ratio is about 30:1, or about 3 cm to 1 mm. The strap or tape may be cut to the desired length and partially embossed, serrated or scored either lengthwise or transversely to provide fracture or flex lines. The spacing of the serrations or score lines control the degree of flexibility or aggressiveness of the tool working face. The invention includes a variety of tools formed from the abrasive strap or tape and these include radial or flap wheels, both serrated and non-serrated, and internal tools using a rotatable stem, also both serrated and non-serrated.
