    • An electrical machine has a rotor shaft which carries a plurality of rotor discs for rotation therewith. Each rotor disc has two pairs of rotor rims secured thereto. Each rotor rim consists of a single row of alternate magnets and pole pieces and is opposed by a series of stator cores which straddle the rotor rim. The stator cores are `c` shaped so that they receive flux from two adjacent magnets and close around two opposite rotor poles on either side of the rotor rim. The stator cores, formed by winding electrical steel around a former, reduce the losses caused by eddy currents generated when flux impinges on the side faces of the stator core.

    • An electromagnetic projectile launcher (commonly referred to as a "railgun") consists of an electrical direct current power supply, two parallel rails (52), and switching armature (54) releasably linked to a projectile armature (56), each armature being slideably located in mutually parallel channels between and along the length of the rails. The rails are each provided with two overlapping conductive zones along their length, the first zone (60) being electrically connected to the power source and in electrical contact with the switching armature in its start position. In operation, electromagnetic forces induced by the power supply propel the switching armature (54), and hence the projectile armature (56) linked to it, along the rails from the start position until the projectile armature comes into electrical contact with the second conductive zone (62). Thereafter the switching armature travels to a position where it is eliminated from the power supply curcuit to prevent it remaining a resistive element in the circuit, the link between the two armatures is broken, and the projectile armature (56) is accelerated through the second zone (62) to its launch velocity to launch the projectile (72). The overlap of the conductive zones (60,62) reduces the tendency for arcing to occur at the trailing edge of the switching armature (54) as it is eliminated from the circuit.

    • An electrical machine incorporates a rotor core assembly (30) wherein the core (33) has rotor bars (31) extending into and secured within slots of end rings (34) either side of the core (33). The core (33) is secured in axial compression upon a shaft (35) by at least inner clamp rings (37). These inner clamp rings (37) include a recess, which in association with a recess in an outer clamp ring (38) forms a cavity to retain a clamp section (36) of the respective end rings (34). The outer clamp ring (38) is secured to the inner clamp ring (37) typically using bolts. Thus, the structural strength of the clamp rings (37, 38) inhibits differential radial growth between the core (33) and the end rings (34) due to thermal, rotational and centrifrugal expansion.

    • A permanent magnet fault tolerant generator 32 is driven by a variable speed shaft 34 to create AC power at terminals 36, converted at 40 to DC power before being applied to a load 38. The converter 40 is a bi-directional device which rectifies AC to DC and also acts as an inverter to synthesize AC from the DC. This synthesized AC waveform is imposed on the terminals 36 to maintain a constant magnitude generator output voltage, regardless of the speed of the shaft 34, and thus regardless of the EMF of the generator. This results in reactive currents flowing between the generator 32 and the converter 40, but allows the generator design have a reduced current rating, resulting in improved generator size and weight.

The phase relationship between the currents through the armature windings (24) and the orientation of the stator cores (22) or the magnets (20) in opposing rims (16) are such that the effects of electromagnetic coupling, long path fluxes and torque ripple is reduced.
