    • A hinged plastic housing and a process for making same wherein a hinge formed from a deformable lamina is integrated with first and second enclosing members during injection of the plastic material. The deformable lamina is placed between the first mold section and the second mold section of an injection mold unit before the first mold section and the second mold section are clamped together to form injection mold cavities for the first and second enclosing members. The deformable lamina at least partially extends into the mold cavity for the first enclosing member and the mold cavity for the second enclosing member as well as therebetween. The first mold section and the second mold section are then clamped together and a plastic material is injected into the mold cavities and in bonding securement of the deformable lamina. The resultant housing is then removed from the mold unit with the deformable lamina hinge integrated with the first and second enclosing members. The deformable lamina may extend over the entire exterior or interior surfaces of the first and second enclosing members to form a combined hinge and exterior covering or interior lining respectively.

    • A process for injection molding a hollow plastic article in which a low pressure heat-activated gas is injected in combination with a plastic material into a mold cavity of a plastic injection mold unit. When the plastic material and heat-activated gas enter the mold cavity, the gas expands to outwardly exert pressure on the plastic material thereby urging the plastic material towards the walls of the mold cavity to, in turn, form the hollow portions of the hollow plastic article. The gas remains within the hollow plastic article and continues to exert outward pressure until the plastic article has substantially cooled and hardened at which time the gas becomes dormant. Accordingly, no venting of the gas from the plastic article is necessary.

    • The method and apparatus for the injection of an injection material into a mold includes an upright extruder mechanism having an upright feed screw driven from its lower end. Material introduced at the top of the extruder is fed by the screw outwardly of the extruder through an outlet projected laterally outwardly from the extruder at a position adjacent the lower end of the screw. The extruder outlet constitutes a piston receivable with a cylindrical material chamber of an injection nozzle unit. Material is fed in one direction in incremental amounts from the extruder and into the material chamber when the extruder is moved in one direction relative to the injection nozzle unit, and is then forced from the material chamber by the extruder outlet and into the nozzle unit for injection into a mold when the extruder is moved in an opposite direction relative to the nozzle unit.

    • The method of aligning the injection nozzle of a mold injection machine of carousel type with the ingate opening of a mold supported on the carousel which comprises the steps of first rotating the carousel to an initial mold position at the mold injection station by an indexing mechanism and then with the indexing mechanism disengaged from the carousel, adjustably moving and locking the carousel by a releasable locking mechanism into the mold injection position wherein the nozzle is movable into and out of operative engagement with the mold ingate opening. The location of a mold at the injection position therefor is initially predetermined by and then accurately relocated and maintained by the locking mechanism during the mold injection cycle.

    • A process for determining the precise initial volume of the mold cavity of an injection molding machine in which a first and second section engage into seated alignment thereby forming a mold cavity. Vent valves, controlling communication between the interior and exterior of the mold cavity, are closed thereby sealing the mold cavity. An injection means begins injecting a test substance into the mold cavity. The test substance continues filling the mold cavity until the detection of a predetermined threshold level. A measuring means performs the step of measuring the amount of the test substance in the mold cavity, thereby providing sufficient information for calculating the precise initial volume of the mold cavity of the injection molding machine. The apparatus used to perform the method described herein comprises an injection molding machine with a mold cavity configured with vent valves capable of sealing the interior of the mold cavity from the exterior. A processing unit operatively connects to the injection molding machine, and a computer-readable control program code executing on the processing unit works the methods described herein to which the present invention relates.

    • A method for injecting a plastic material into a mold cavity to precisely fill the mold cavity under low pressure and to avoid packing the mold cavity with plastic material. The plastic material is injected into the mold cavity at a rate sufficient to maintain an unbroken melt front and to avoid any spraying or splashing of the plastic material within the mold cavity. After an initial unbroken melt front is established, the rate at which the material is injected is increased in proportion to the size of the melt front. After a predetermined amount of the material has entered the mold cavity, the material is injected based upon a rate-dominated control algorithm which maintains the unbroken melt front. Once the mold cavity has reached a pre-determined level of fill, the rate-dominated control algorithm is changed to a pressure-dominated control algorithm to prevent overrunning the end point of the mold process and to eliminate splashing and associated backflow problems. The injection pressure is monitored and controlled until the mold cavity has been precisely filled, at which time the injection pressure is maintained until the plastic article has hardened within the mold cavity. By filling the mold cavity exactly, the prior art problems associated with packing, such as warping and flash, are eliminated in the present invention and a more uniform product is produced from less material.
