    • A two piece sealing system for a universal joint assembly. A lubricant seal adapted to prevent the leakage of lubricant between the trunnion and bearing cup of a universal joint wherein the trunnion has a cylindrical portion merging into an outwardly flaring arcuate base portion, the seal including an elastomer body bonded to the interior of a stiffening ring. The body of the seal has two lips that extend from a thin section as two symmetrical cantilever protrusions each having a fully radiused tip, the line of symmetry for the symmetrical lips running from a point near the intersection of the trunnion diameter and the trunnion arcuate radius toward the center of the trunnion arcuate radius, the thin section above the two cantilevered protrusions allowing both lips of the seal to pivot about the line of symmetry, one of the lips contacting the journal trunnion diameter and being directed toward the interior of the bearing cup to maintain the level of the bearing lubricant, the other lip contacting the trunnion arcuate radius and is directed away from the interior of the bearing cup to deny the entrance of environmental contaminants, the combination of the thin section and the symmetric lips allowing the interference points of the seal to float. The outer boot seal formed between the bearing cap and the outer cylindrical friction surface of an associated trunnion includes an outer seal of elastomeric material having a tubular portion and an inwardly extending annular portion at one end. The tubular portion has structure for maintaining contact with the outside diameter of the bearing cup and the inwardly extending annular portion has a stiffening ring molded into the elastomer to provide the required strength and stiffness to retain the outer boot seal on the outer cylindrical surface of the trunnion by way of a press fit.

    • An improved telescoping torque transmitting connection and a method for making tubes used in the formation of this connection are disclosed. The tubes are formed with inwardly extending lobes and the lobes are formed so that the wall thickness of the tube in their vicinity is at least as great as it is in the remainder of the tube, whereby the strength of the tube is not reduced by formation of the lobes. The lobes are formed with substantially flat flanks for interaction with the lobes of the mating tube, whereby the contact between the two tubes is made at a plurality of planar surfaces rather than along a plurality of lines so that the end loading developed when the tubes are telescoped with respect to one another under load is not excessive. The method for making the tubes involves drawing a precursor tube to an intermediate precursor having non-uniform wall thickness, in which the wall thickness of the tube is increased in the vicinity of the lobes to be formed, so that the wall thickness of the eventually-formed lobes is at least as great as that of the tube in the areas not having the lobes formed therein.

    • An improved guard for an articulated torque transmitting shaft such as the power transmission shaft connecting a tractor with an agricultural implement is disclosed. The guard according to the invention comprises bellows members for fitting over U-joints at either end and telescoping tubes connecting the bellows. The telescoping tubes are locked to the respective bellows by L-shaped keys which extend through slots formed through the tube and through the bellows and which have circumferentially extending tabs which ride in grooves formed in the universal joints, to locate the juncture of the tube and bellows with respect to the joint. In the preferred embodiment, the entire assembly is constructed of plastic.

    • An annular shaft seal to be moved over a first, larger diameter portion of a shaft and to seal against a second, smaller, diameter portion of the shaft. The shaft seal comprises a mounting portion, a sealing lip portion and a flexible channel-shaped portion interconnecting the mounting portion and the sealing lip portion. The sealing lip portion has a primary sealing lip and a secondary sealing lip disposed adjacent to and spaced axially from the primary sealing lip in a direction away from the mounting portion. The sealing lip portion is movable with respect to the mounting portion from the sealing profile in which the primary sealing lip has a smaller diameter than the secondary sealing lip and is adapted to be in sealing contact with the second portion of the shaft, to a non-sealing profile in which the diameter of the primary sealing lip is larger than that of the secondary sealing lip, and in which the secondary sealing lip engages the larger diameter portion of the shaft thereby distending the primary sealing lip to its larger diameter condition such that the primary sealing lip cannot contact either portion of the shaft when the seal is being installed on the shaft. The primary sealing lip is maintained out of contact with the first portion of the shaft during installation and after installation the sealing lip portion without reversal thereof automatically returns from non-sealing profile back to sealing profile whereby the primary sealing lip automatically moves into sealing contact with the second portion of the shaft after the secondary sealing lip has been moved over and beyond the first portion of the shaft to engage the second portion of the shaft.

    • A coupling device for connecting an externally splined shaft having a circumferential groove therein to an internally splined member. The internally splined member has a plurality of radial openings in the sides thereof which receive a corresponding plurality of balls for protrusion between the splines in the groove in the externally splined shaft. A twist collar is positioned on the internally splined member and is rotatable through a predetermined angle. The twist collar has cam structure extending around the interior periphery with a plurality of dwells at spaced locations corresponding to the plurality of radial openings in the sides of the internally splined member. An inclined cam surface interconnects two adjacent dwells and is positioned to engage one of the balls during rotation of the twist collar to force the one ball into the groove in the externally splined shaft. A torsion spring connects the internally splined member and the twist collar and is constructed for rotation through the predetermined angle. The coupling device is normally in its locked position and is rotatable by an operator to an open position for installation of the internally splined member with respect to the externally splined shaft.
