    • Apparatus and method for estimating the angle-modulation imposed on a transmitted Radio Frequency (RF) or Intermediate Frequency (IF) carrier. The method estimates angle-modulation when communications channels add distortions such as noise to transmitted signals. The system provides reconstituted frequency modulation from a feedforward demodulator. The goal is to reduce the modulation index of a desired signal and to employ a narrower band-pass filter that passes this signal while rejecting the distortion that accompanies it. A plurality of stages, 1 through M, exist within the system. Stages 2 through M contain the same components, although filter coefficients and alignment delays may differ from stage to stage. Stage 1 of the demodulator differs slightly from the remaining stages, since the only input required by Stage 1 is a complex envelope signal that contains both the desired signal and the distortion added by the channel. The output of any particular stage of the demodulator consists of complex envelope signals and a real FM estimate. Each output from a stage p serves as input to stage p+1, for 2.ltoreq.p+1

    • A receiver input circuit composed of an upper sideband parametric down converter for converting a high frequency input signal into an intermediate frequency; a signal demodulator having a signal input connected to the output of the converter; a controllable oscillator connected in a control loop with the converter and the demodulator for supplying the converter with a pump signal which follows the intermediate signal in frequency and phase and which has a frequency equal to twice the intermediate frequency such that the sum of the pump signal frequency and the intermediate frequency equals three times the intermediate frequency; and a real resistance terminating the converter at the image frequency corresponding to the established pump signal and intermediate frequencies, whereby the circuit has an available power gain greater than unity and an improved signal to noise ratio ahead of the demodulator.

    • The output frequency of a variable frequency oscillator is compared with that of a reference frequency source by means of a phase detector and the resultant error signal is integrated and applied as a negative feedback signal to the input of the oscillator whereby drift of the oscillator output frequency is minimized. Deviation, modulation index, dynamic stability and linearity are enhanced by means of a pulse generator that is synchronized with a modulating input signal supplied to the oscillator for supplying a keying signal to the phase detector during a portion of each cycle of the modulating input signal.

    • A phase locked loop circuit comprises a phase comparator having an operation range with specific limits for phase comparing. A voltage-controlled oscillator produces an output at the output of the phase locked loop. At the same time, the oscillator output is fed to the phase comparator. A detector circuit, supplied with the output of the phase comparator, detects any exceeding of a specific limit of the phase by comparing the operation range of the phase comparator with a phase deviation of the oscillator output signal fed to the phase comparator. The detector produces an output correction voltage. An adder circuit adds this output correction voltage and an output error voltage of the phase comparator and supplies the resulting added voltage, as a control voltage, to the voltage-controlled oscillator. This phase locked loop operates in a state wherein the lock range thereof has been equivalently expanded by the correction voltage.
