摘要： Polyphenylene oxides are prepared by the oxidative coupling of monohydroxy aromatic compounds such as 2,6-xylenol in the presence of copper-bromide-amine catalysts in which at least part of the amine component is a diamine such as N,N'diphenylethylendiamine, N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-dimethylethylene diamine or N,N'-diphenylpiperazine. Other amines preferably present in the catalyst are a tertiary monoamine such as dimethyl-n-butylamine and a secondary monoamine such as di-n-butylamine. The diamines are characterized by a low rate of consumption during polymerization, and the catalysts prepared therefrom are hydrolytically stable.

The novel resin may be used, for example, as a film sheet or as an agent for improving the impact strength of polystyrene.

摘要： A resinous linear polyester, poly(oxy-1,4-phenylene-3-oxotrimethylene), is made by the self-condensation of 3-(parahydroxyphenyl)propionic acid. The process is carried out interfacially or in an inert solvent by mixing 3-(parahydroxyphenyl)propionic acid with at least an equimolar proportion of thionyl chloride and maintaining the mixture at a reaction temperature for a time sufficient to allow substantially complete autocondensation. A base may be added in proportion at least about equivalent to the thionyl chloride. The autocondensate when purified is a white solid linear polyester not melting up to 360.degree. C. and may exhibit an intrinsic viscosity of at least 75 ml/g. It may be molded or pressed into a film.Co-condensed polyesters of 3-(parahydroxyphenyl)propionic acid with up to an equimolar proportion of parahydroxyphenylacetic acid may similarly be prepared.

摘要： New, highly reactive, polymerizable compounds are described, corresponding to the formula ##STR1## wherein R is H or lower alkyl, Z is a linking entity which is a chemical bond, lower alkylene, lower alkylenedioxy, O or the like, m is an integer 2-3 and n is 0-10. They are prepared by reaction of the corresponding 3(methylthio)phenolic compounds with the appropriate 1,4- or 1,5-alkylene bromide and converting the resulting cyclic sulfonium bromide to the zwitterion by treatment with a strong base anion-exchange resin in hydroxide form. They polymerize in a few minutes at 30.degree.-50.degree. C. to form polymers useful as coatings.
