A pair of springs (52,54) attached to the frame (12) cooperate with the stop members (42,44) to maintain the lateral orientation of the hood member (16) with respect to the frame (12) and support a portion of the weight of the hood member during ground engaging operation of the machine (10).

    • A soil preparation machine is pulled by a tractor across a field in which rows of plants and tracks followed by the tractor are at permanent locations from season to season. Soil from between the remains of two rows of the previous season's plants is lifted by a blade and delivered to the forward end of a belt conveyor which is slanted rearwardly and upwardly. Devices on the machine upturn the remains of the previous season's plants and the soil beneath them. Soil falls from the rear end of the conveyor onto the upturned remains. The blade and conveyor are narrower than the distance between the rows of plants, and the upturning devices are aligned with the rows of plants inboard of the tractor tracks.

    • The prior art discloses a surgical stapler having an anvil surface terminating in a flange, a staple feed track movably containing a plurality of staples and a staple forming track movably containing a forming blade. The improved stapler of this invention discloses the nondistal portion of the feed track being substantially parallel to the forming track. Further, the distal portion of the feed track is in substantial alignment with the distal portion of the forming track. Also the distal ends of the tracks are open in the same direction. Finally, the distal end of the feed track is between the anvil flange and the distal end of the forming track.

    • A cultivating machine has groups of soil working tines that are mounted on an elongated support that is driven to rotate about a horizontal axis. The tines are mounted in spaced apart groups and guide members converge at the rear of the groups to form ridges of worked soil. Each group includes tine units that are formed by opposing bracket portions clamped to the support. Strikers can be mounted on the support between groups of tines and the strikers are pivotable about respective horizontal axes spaced from the support's axis of rotation. The strikers are positioned to excise crop leaves or emerged growth on the ridges. Hoods and a grating ensure that the top layer of worked soil is free of debris. Screening plates having obliquely upwardly and inwardly inclined inner edges are located at the lower, front, outer corners of the hood to prevent the rearwardly adjacent time groups from displacing soil too far laterally.

    • A plough has forward soil-loosening means, soil-elevating elements and a soil-crumbling mechanism mounted under a screen. The plough has a beamed frame and side plates between which the elements and crumbling mechanism are rotatably mounted. A forward coupling assembly includes two arched beams that can be interconnected at several spaced apart points so that the plow can be placed at various locations behind a prime mover. The power take off is in driving engagement with the elements and crumbling mechanism. The soil-loosening means can be forwardly extending tines that are bolted in holders with the latter being pivotably mounted and spring biased to operative positions. The front of the plough rests on ground wheels with means to adjust the working level of the tines or other loosening means.
