    • A break-away ring manufactured from a frangible material and removably received by a water meter of the type used to measure the volume of water consumed by a residence or a commercial facility. The break-away ring applies a holding pressure for retaining within the water meter a register to measure the volume of water consumed. The ring has a plurality of notches formed therein. A tool is inserted in one of the notches for prying the break-away ring outwardly from the water meter, whereby to break the ring and end the holding pressure generated thereby. Accordingly, the register can now be easily lifted out of the water meter for repair or replacement. The foregoing removal of the register is accomplished without having to either interrupt the water service to the consumer or disconnect the water meter from the consumer's water line.

    • A system for detection of tampering with a utility meter provides not only an indication that tampering has occurred but also sufficient information to enable an estimation of actual consumption to be made as opposed to the tampered metered consumption. The device includes a plurality of tampering sensors sensing tilt, electric field, magnetic field, temperature, sound, reverse rotation of a moving element and excessive difference between metered consumption and an approximate actual consumption. The device also measures the movement of the moving element. These sensed signals are recorded in sequential time periods of for example eight hours so that an analysis can be made on a daily basis to provide an accurate pattern of consumption as opposed to the tampered meter consumption pattern.

    • A universal expansion connection (32) couples a water meter (10) to an outlet pipe (30). The expansion connection (32) comprises a threaded expansion tube (36), a threaded packer (38) and a lock case (40). The threaded packer (38) is threaded onto the expansion tube (36), which has been installed on an outlet (34) on the meter (10). The lock case (40) is then positioned over and onto the packer (38) such that a driver dog (63) on the packer (38) matches a driver dog recess (64) in the case (40). By holding the expansion tube (36) from turning, the lock case (40) is turned to unscrew the threaded packer (38) from the tube (36). The unscrewing action forces the packer (38) into the internal surface (68) of the lock case (40), as well as forcing the threads (58) into the threads (54) on the tube (36 ). When the lock case (40) has been sufficiently unscrewed, a fluid-tight seal is formed between the meter (10) and the outlet pipe (30). A locking bolt (33) is then inserted through the lock case (40) via a shroud (76). The locking bolt (33) is positioned between a plurality of spaced-apart locking bars (46) on the tube (36) to prevent further rotation thereof.

    • A water meter is provided with a retaining ring which is mounted on the top wall of the main case and secured thereto by means of a connection requiring limited rotary motion for engagement. A bonnet within which the register housing is enclosed is mounted on the retaining ring by a similar rotary motion whereby removal of either the bonnet from the retaining ring or the retaining ring from the main case requires only limited rotary motion in the reverse direction. To prevent removal of the register by unauthorized individuals such reverse rotary motion is prevented by a locking pin which projects through the bonnet, the retaining ring and into a recess in the main case whereby relative rotary motion between the bonnet and the retaining ring and the retaining ring and the main case is prevented. Once in place the pin cannot be removed without visible deformation or destruction thereof.
