    • A lance for submerged injection of a feed composition, such as a waste, into a molten metal bath includes a perforate refractory tube which extends substantially coaxially about an injection tube. The perforate refractory tube shields the injection tube from the molten metal bath during partial submersion of the lance into the molten metal bath. A perforate support liner extends between the injection tube and the perforate refractory tube and supports the perforate refractory tube. The perforate support liner and the injection tube define an annulus. The method includes conducting a coolant from a coolant source through the annulus to perforations defined by the perforate support liner and the perforate refractory tube, whereby coolant can be directed through the perforations and into the molten metal bath to cause a protective coating of metal to form on the lance. The lance is thereby protected, preserving its structural and chemical integrity during submerged injection of the feed composition through the injection tube into the molten metal bath.

    • A collecting pit for receiving molten metal and draining cooling water. The collecting pit (1) is equipped with a drainage layer (5, 6) formed of slag granulate, the grains of the slag granulate being interconnected by means of a binder while maintaining small channels present between these grains. The drainage layer mass also may contain thermally expanding silicic acid. The binder of the drainage layer mass may be a water-activatable heat-resistant binder containing cement, e.g. high-alumina cement. The drainage layer material exhibits a good permeability for water and vapor over a long period of time. Preferably, the drainage structure, in the bottom region of the collecting pit (1), includes a drainage layer (5) formed of slag granulate and binder and of supporting bottom plates (8), a continuous aeration space (13) being provided below the bottom plates (8) and, furthermore, wall plates (16) being attached to the side walls of the collecting pit and a continuous aeration space (17) being formed also between the wall plates (16) and the pit wall (15).

    • In a method for cooling a rotary kiln having a cylindrical outer jacket, cooling air is blown at high speed radially towards the jacket from an annular supply-air chamber surrounding the jacket and having a perforated inner wall which is located at a slight distance from the jacket and through which the cooling air is blown towards the jacket. The cooling air is sucked out from the space between the jacket and the inner wall to an annular exhaust-air chamber which is separate from and surrounds the supply-air chamber and communicates with said space. The cooling-air flow through the chambers is adjusted by fan devices connected thereto. A device for implementing this method has an annular supply-air chamber surrounding the jacket and having a perforated inner wall which is located at a slight distance from the jacket and designed for radially blowing cooling air towards the jacket. An annular exhaust-air chamber, which is separate from and surrounds the supply-air chamber, communicates with the space between the jacket and the inner wall to conduct cooling air from this space. Fan devices are connected to the chambers in order to adjust the cooling-air flow therethrough.

    • A system for cooling a single or plural zones of the exterior of a furnace or similar hot device, e.g., kiln, calciner, etc. Each zone is cooled by a respective cooling assembly. The operation of the assemblies is effected by a common control system. Each cooling assembly comprises a shroud, an induction cooler, e.g., an exhaust fan, and at least one atomizing spray nozzle. The shroud is in the form of a jacket disposed over the associated exterior zone of the furnace and is spaced therefrom to form a cooling chamber therebetween. The exhaust fan is coupled to the shroud for inducing the flow of cooling air through the cooling chamber so that it absorbs heat from furnace's exterior. The atomizing spray nozzle is also coupled to the shroud and to a water and an air supply for introducing atomized droplets of water into the chamber, whereupon the droplets vaporize to absorb heat from the furnace's exterior. The exhaust fan vents the air and steam from the shroud means. A controller controls the operation of each cooling assembly pursuant to feed-back signals from respective thermal sensors mounted in each cooling assembly.

    • A power activated assembly is disclosed that provides rapid and simultaneous disconnection and reconnection of water cooled power connectors to and from an induction furnace of a melting assembly which is tiltable about the axis of its trunnion. The power activated assembly carries extensions that have respective female connectors on the end and which have flexible conductors connected for supplying electrical power and cooling water to the induction furnace. The housing is positioned concentric with the trunnion so as to allow its female connectors to mate with corresponding male connectors of the assembly when the housing is axially moved toward and along the trunnion axis in response to motion control means such as a power activated device. The male connectors are distributed on the assembly about and inside the circumference of the trunnion. In one embodiment, the male and female connectors have flow control means such as shut-off valves which allow the water to flow from the coolant supply source to the vacuum furnace when the connectors are engaged and terminates such flow when the connectors are disengaged. The power activated assembly of the present invention reduces the time needed to remove the crucible of the assembly or to exchange the introduction furnace of the assembly.

    • A cooling system is disclosed which is incorporated in a heat treating apparatus for use in a manufacturing process of a semiconductor device etc. The heat treating apparatus includes a reaction tube for receiving products to be heat treated in its uniformly heated zone, and a heater which surrounds the reaction tube. Inlet means for blowing a cooling fluid and exhaust means for collecting that cooling fluid which is heated after the cooling function thereof has been achieved are provided. The fluid is blown from the inlet means around the reaction tube, substantially perpendicular to the axis of the reduction tube, and as a result, a flow of cooling fluid from the inlet means toward the exhaust means is established beyond the length of the uniformly heated zone, thus the entire reaction zone within the reaction tube is uniformly cooled.
