摘要： A method and apparatus are provided for making a metal product with improved surface characteristics. The method provides for treating the metal product through a method including: heating the metal product; exposing the outer surface of the metal product to a controlled environment; and oxidising the outer surface of the metal product. The heating may take the metal product to an elevated temperature, the elevated temperature of the metal product being at least 725° C. The method further includes a controlled environment around the metal product which is controlled with respect to the atmosphere around the metal product, and in particular the nitrogen and/or oxygen and/or hydrogen content thereof. The result is a more consistent surface for elongate metal products, having a more consistent colour to the surface, a more durable and hard wearing surface and/or a surface which is not prone to flaking.

The method includes the steps of: a) providing a heating chamber having a heat source and an oxidizing gas source selectively operable to provide a stream of oxidizing gas; b) providing at least one substrate disposed in the heating chamber, which substrate has a composition sufficient to permit formation of an alpha alumina scale on one or more surfaces; c) maintaining a vacuum in the heating chamber at a level that inhibits formation of one or more low temperature oxides on the one or more surfaces of the substrate; d) heating at least one of the one or more surfaces of the substrate to a predetermined temperature at or above 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; and e) directing the stream of oxidizing gas at a controlled rate toward one or more heated surfaces of the substrate.

摘要： A honeycomb body, in particular a catalyst carrier body, includes metallic foil of high-temperature corrosion-resistant steel with connecting points and an oxide layer with a thickness of 60 to 80 or 70 to 75 nm on each surface. The foil is composed of steel with chromium and aluminum components, particularly 1 to 5% aluminum. The oxide layer is substantially aluminum oxide or γ-aluminum oxide with a uniform thickness having a tolerance of less than 10% or less than 5% on all surfaces. The oxide layer may be on a rolled foil having a mean surface roughness of greater than 0.3 or 0.5 μm or approximately 0.6 μm in rolling direction and/or transversely thereto. The honeycomb body is durable under high loads and has defined connecting points. A foil having an oxide coat and a method for producing an oxide coat on a metallic foil are also provided.

摘要： Disclosed is a chromium-nickel stainless steel alloy article having an adherent, wear resistant coating of metallic oxides and a method of forming an adherent, wear resistant coating of metallic oxides on a chromium-nickel stainless steel alloy article. The coating desirably has a thickness of from about 25.4 to about 102 microns (1 mil to about 4 mils) and is formed by exposure of the article to an oxidizing atmosphere, preferably air, preferably during heat treatment of the article. Such articles are useful, inter alia, as torque drive inserts for a friction disk for a multi-disk brake or clutch assembly. The drive inserts can be formed of an alloy such as 17-4PH stainless steel alloy having an adherent coating of lubricious oxides formed during frictional contact. It is believed that these lubricious oxides will form also if the heat treated base alloy is subject to temperatures greater than 815.6° C. (1500° F.) for a sufficient time in an oxidizing atmosphere.
