    • An occupant judging device for a vehicle seat includes a load sensor provided in the vehicle seat and a controller for calculating a detected load value based on an output load value from the load sensor and determining an occupant on the vehicle seat by comparing the detected load value and a predetermined threshold value. The controller judges by a decrease state of the detected load value detected after the seatbelt is fastened being maintained for a first predetermined time that a child restraint device is installed, when a state in which the seatbelt is fastened and the door is opened is detected. Further, the controller judges by a decrease state of the detected load value detected after the seatbelt is fastened being maintained for a second predetermined time that the child restraint device is installed, when a state in which the seatbelt is fastened and the door is closed is detected.

    • An apparatus (10) includes a member (14) that has a first slot (30) extending through the member within the periphery (32) of the member. The first slot (30) has opposed spaced surfaces (34) that define a gap (40) that has a width measured from one of the opposed surfaces to the other of the opposed surfaces. The member (14) includes first and second portions (42 and 44) positioned on opposite sides of the first slot (30). The apparatus (10) also includes a sensor (16) that has a first end (100) connected to the first portion (42) on one side of the first slot (30) and an opposite second end (102) connected to the second portion (44) on an opposite side of the first slot such that the sensor extends across the first slot. The apparatus (10) further includes a fastener (20) for fixedly connecting the second portion (44) to inhibit movement of the second portion of the member relative to the first portion (42). The first portion (42) moves relative to the second portion (44) when a force is applied to the first portion, which causes the width of the gap to change. The sensor (16) provides a signal in response to the change in the gap width.

    • The present invention provides an apparatus to ensure use of seat belts in a motor vehicle which comprises a first means disposed in a first predetermined location for generating and transmitting a first signal when an occupant is detected in a seat. A second means is disposed in a second predetermined location for generating and transmitting a second signal representative of such seat belt being one of unlatched and latched. There is a third means disposed in a third predetermined location for receiving such second signal and for generating and transmitting a third signal when such seat belt, detected as being latched extends insufficiently to encircle such occupant. A fourth means is disposed in a fourth predetermined location for receiving the first signal indicating such presence of such occupant in such seat thereby enabling such fourth means to generate and transmit a fourth signal when such fourth means is activated by also receiving one of the second signal indicating that such seat belt corresponding to an occupant is unlatched and the third signal indicating that such seat belt is latched but extends insufficiently to encircle such occupant. There is a disabling unit disposed in a fifth predetermined location, connected to receive the fourth signal, for preventing gear engagement when it receives the fourth signal indicating that a seat belt corresponding to an occupied seat is one of unlatched and latched but not extending sufficiently to encircle such passenger.
