Since printer 1 executes compression using the spare time during the printing process, it does not cause any delay in the printing process due to overlapping of the printing process and the compression process.

摘要： A magnetoresistive (MR) reproduction element is positioned during data recording, data reproduction, and formatting so that its total range of movement is 3/2 times a range of movement (microjogging) from the location of the reproduction element in data recording to the location of the reproduction element in data reproduction. The total range of movement is centered within a range where the detection of positional error of the reproduction element changes linearly. Therefore, in the respective data recording, data reproduction and formatting processes, microjogging is performed and the detection of positional error changes linearly for each of an off-track OF.sub.W in data recording, an off-track OF.sub.R in data reproduction, and an off-track OF.sub.F in formatting. Accordingly, the characteristics of the MR reproduction element can be effectively used to a maximum degree and information can be reproduced without being undetected or erroneously detected.

摘要： A disk and a disk drive having a servo start mark for identifying a servo-information start position recorded on the disk is provided. The servo start mark has a plurality of bit patterns unused for other areas in servo information. A method for identifying the position of a signal transducer on a disk is also provided in which it is judged that the signal transducer is present at a predetermined position even if an error is present and the error is a one-bit error. This is accomplished by assuming that the position is correct when the following conditions are confirmed: (a) a parity error occurs in a read servo-information bit pattern and (b) read servo-information bit pattern does not coincide with servo information of an adjacent track.

摘要： A disk drive apparatus and read error recovery method in a disk drive apparatus removes thermal asperities on disk surfaces. A projection, such as a thermal asperity, on the recording surfaces of disks is detected when a signal transducer contacts the projection. The flying height of the signal transducer is lowered, e.g., by reducing the disk rotation speed from the normal rotation speed in read/write operations, while the signal transducer is positioned over the detected projection on the track. The signal transducer strikes the projection to break the projection. This avoids a subsequent error from being caused by the thermal asperity.

A coefficient applicator applies a predetermined coefficient K.sub.1 to the above deviation (multiplication), and a variable coefficient applicator applies a coefficient K.sub.a to the resulting value. The coefficient K.sub.a is varied and set in the variable coefficient applicator in accordance with a value input from a table. The correspondence between the target PES value and the coefficient K.sub.a used as a feedback coefficient for the PES value is stored in the table in advance so that the coefficient K.sub.a is small when the PES value varies sharply and so that the coefficient K.sub.a is large when the PES value is small. The variable coefficient applicator outputs, to a driver, a value to which the coefficient K.sub.a has been applied in accordance with the value from the table.
