    • An in-building telephone distribution system has a multi-conductor telephone distribution cable, starting at the point where the telephone utility lines enter the building and extending from there to each location at which a telephone outlet is wanted, at which a smoke alarm is wanted, and/or at which one of numerous other devices (e.g., door chime) might be wanted. At a suitable point along the cable, a first pair of the cable's conductors is connected with the power output terminals of a Class-2 (or Class-2-equivalent) DC power supply, whose power input terminals are connected with an ordinary electric utility power line. Thus, at any point along the cable, the first pair of conductors may be accessed and used as a Class-2 DC power source. A second pair of the cable's distribution conductors is used for distribution of the telephone signals. Each telephone outlet is connected with the second pair of conductors for telephone signals and with the first pair of conductors for Class-2 DC power; which Class-2 DC power is used for powering those telephone instruments requiring DC power, such as cord-less telephones, telephone answering machines, fax machines, modems, etc. A third pair of conductors is used for smoke alarm signals and is therefore connected with each smoke alarm; each of which is also connected with the first pair of conductors so as to have access to Class-2 DC power.

    • A fluorescent lighting system has: (A) a central power supply including: (i) a parallel-resonant self-oscillating bridge inverter operative to provide a 35 kHz sinusoidal output voltage at a pair of primary output terminals; (ii) a tank-inductor and a tank-capacitor parallel-connected across the primary output terminals; and (iii) plural pairs of secondary output terminals, each connected with the primary output terminals via its own dedicated current-limiting sub-circuit; thereby to prevent a load connected therewith from drawing more than a certain amount of power; thereby, in turn, to render each pair of secondary output terminals fire-hazard-safe and shock-hazard-safe; each pair of secondary power output terminals being connected with its own power output receptacle; and (B) a light-weight power cord plug-in-connected with one of the power output receptacles and having a pair of power conductors between which are connected a number of individually ballasted lighting units; each lighting unit having at least one gas discharge lamp as well as a high-power-factor ballasting assembly that includes a tuned parallel-connected LC circuit having a natural resonance frequency equal to that of the output voltage provided from the central power supply. Due to having each lighting unit parallel-resonant at the frequency of the output voltage, the drastic frequency change and concomitant loss in per-lamp light output usually occurring when adding several separately ballasted lamp loads to the output of a parallel-resonant self-oscillating power supply will not occur.

    • A lighting system comprises a number of central power supplies, with each central power supply being powered from a 277 Volt/60 Hz power line and operative to provide a voltage output of 277 Volt RMS magnitude and 30 kHz frequency to each of a plurality of special incandescent lighting fixtures. Each special lighting fixture comprises: i) an incandescent lamp designed to be properly powered by a voltage of 24 Volt RMS magnitude, and ii) a transformer operative to convert the 277 VoltRMS/30 kHz voltage to a 24 VoltRMS/30 kHz voltage. The reason for using 24 Volt incandescent lamps is that, at the lumen output levels normally required of light bulbs used in general lighting applications, an incandescent light bulb designed for and operated on 24 Volt RMS exhibits substantially higher efficacy and/or durability for a given lumen output level as compared with a light bulb designed for and operated on 277 Volt RMS (or 120 Volt RMS). The reason for distributing power by way of 277 VoltRMS/30 kHz instead of 277 Volt/60 Hz (or 120 Volt/60 Hz) relates to the fact that size, weight, efficiency and cost of a transformer suitable for operation on 30 kHz are very much more advantageous than would be the case at 277 Volt/60 Hz (or 120 Volt/60 Hz).

    • Controlled DC supply voltage is provided to a self-oscillating FET bridge inverter ballast from a pre-converter and by way of an inductor having two separate windings on a common magnetic core--with one winding being positioned in each leg of the DC supply. The inverter is loaded by way of a parallel-tuned L-C circuit connected across the bridge inverter's output, thereby providing a special AC output voltage thereat. This special AC output voltage is characterized in that it exhibits an unusually high rate of voltage change at its cross-over points but otherwise has a substantially sinusoidal waveshape. An instant-start fluorescent lamp is connected via a current-limiting capacitor across the bridge inverter's output. The magnitude of the DC supply voltage is so chosen as to cause the magnitude of the AC output voltage to be such as to effectuate proper instant-starting of the fluorescent lamp. Because the AC output voltage is balanced with respect to ground, U.L. requirements are met without the need for an isolation transformer. Each of the four FET's is driven by providing a sinusoidal AC voltage directly from a positive feedback winding on the tank-inductor of the L-C circuit.

    • In a fluorescent lamp ballast, a high-frequency AC voltage is applied directly across a tuned L-C circuit. The fluorescent lamp is connected in parallel with the capacitor of the L-C circuit and a voltage-limiting means prevents the series-resonating L-C circuit from overloading the source of AC voltage during any period when the lamp is not effective in providing circuit loading. When power is initially applied to the L-C circuit, a control means provides a short circuit across the capacitor; and, by way of a first current transformer, the resulting short circuit current is used for pre-heating the fluorescent lamp cathodes. After about 1.5 second, the control means provides for removal of the short circuit for a period of about 25 milli-seconds, thereby permitting the voltage across the capacitor to grow to a magnitude sufficient to ignite and operate the lamp, while at the same time removing the cathode voltage. If the lamp ignites, the resulting lamp current is then used, by way of a second current transformer, to prevent the control means from re-providing the short circuit. If lamp current does not flow, or if it at any time ceases to flow, the control means will re-provide the short circuit within about 25 milli-second. Thereafter, until power is removed or until an operable lamp is connected, the control means will continuously repeat the cycle of 1.5 second short circuit and 25 milli-seconds open circuit.

    • A power supply is plugged into an ordinary household electrical outlet and conditionally provides a high frequency current at a power receptacle operative to receive the power plug of an ordinary table lamp; which table lamp has a special fluorescent lamp screwed into its lamp socket. Provided the special fluorescent lamp is indeed screwed into the lamp socket, and provided the lamp'switch is in its ON position, the power supply does in fact supply high frequency current from its power receptacle; which high frequency current powers the special fluorescent lamp at a nominal power level, thereby to provide for high-efficacy luminous output. A storage battery contained within the power supply is kept fully charged by current derived from the power line voltage normally present at the electrical outlet and functions such as to cause high frequency current to be supplied from the output receptacle even if the power line voltage were to be disrupted. To prolong the duration over which the battery can power the fluorescent lamp to a useful light output level, the magnitude of the power provided to the lamp during power failure may be reduced compared with its nominal level.
