    • A problem associated with field emission displays is that of `smearing` where an otherwise sharp image appears to be surrounded by a diffuse halo of light. Our investigations have suggested that this is due to spurious reflections from the surface of the gate electrode layer. To eliminate these we have deposited an anti-reflection coating on the top surface of the gate electrode layer. This prevents the reflection of light rays travelling away from the phosphor layer towards the cathode. Such rays, if their reflection were allowed, would emerge at a different spot in the display from what was intended, resulting in a false image. A method for manufacturing a field emission display based on this approach is also described.

    • A method for connecting, both mechanically and electrically, an electrically conducting field emission fiber (31) to an electrically conducting area of a substrate (32) involving placing the field emission fiber (31) across the surface of the substrate (32) and centering the field emission fiber (31) over the area of the substrate (32) where the connection is to be made, placing a metal ribbon (33) over the field emission fiber (31) with the dimension along the length of the metal ribbon (33) essentially perpendicular to the axis of the field emission fiber (31) and such that the metal ribbon (33) extends over the field emission fiber (31) with each end portion of the metal ribbon (33) in direct contact with the conducting area of the substrate (32), and bonding the metal ribbon (33) to the area of the substrate (32) and to the field emission fiber (31) by means of ultrasonic, thermocompression or compression bonding, substantially as shown in the figures, and described in the specification. The present method of connecting a field emission fiber to a substrate may be readily automated such that a multitude of such connections can be made.

    • An emitter structure for a field emission display includes: a substrate (100) having a top surface; an address line (142) embedded in the substrate (100) and having an upper surface substantially coplanar with the top surface of the substrate (100); and an emitter site (152) having an emitter (154) superjacent to the top surface of the substrate (100) apart from the address line (142) and having a contact (153) having a first portion coupled to the emitter (142) and a second portion coupled to the address line (142). The substrate (100) may further include a base layer (110), and a dielectric layer (120), and the contact (153) may further act as a resistor to limit the current to the emitter (154).
