    • In automatically obtaining a height h of a collimated position by collimating a leveling rod 1 to which bar marks 11 are attached, if the height h is obtained by an image pattern of the leveling rod 1, the size of the image pattern of the leveling rod 1 must be corrected inside an electronic level 2 depending on the distance between the leveling rod 1 and the electronic level 2. A long time is required for the computation processing for this correction. In this invention, on the other hand, the ratios of the distances between respectively adjoining bar marks 11 are obtained and the height h is obtained from the manner in which the ratios are arrayed.

    • A grade rod is provided for measuring the depth of cut required to level a ground surface relative to a benchmark elevation location. The grade rod includes an elongated reference member having a reference mark for defining a predetermined elevation at the benchmark elevation location. An elongated extension member is slidably mounted adjacent to the reference member. The extension member has a base end for engaging the ground surface. The reference member is vertically movable relative to the extension member to permit vertical adjustment of the reference mark. A scale is carried by one of the reference member and the extension member for indicating to the user the vertical adjustment required to locate the reference mark at the predetermined elevation at any point on the ground surface. The measurement determines the depth of cut necessary for leveling the ground surface relative to the benchmark elevation location.

    • A hub for land surveying with an electronic distance measurement (EDM) instrument and a prism pole, the hub having a taper at one end and, at the other end, a surface marked with a series of parallel lines 0.01 feet apart. When the hub is driven into the ground at the approximate location of a second traverse point and one final measurement is taken from the top of the hub, the holder of the prism pole can quickly and easily obtain the exact location of the second traverse point with no additional measurements being taken. The hub may have a second set of lines at a 90 degree angle with respect to the first to help the prism rod holder locate the true traverse line, distinguish each line in the first series of lines, and determine the center of the hub. The hub may also have markings on the side of the hub serving as a specialized ruler to assist the prism rod holder in locating the approximate second traverse point before he drives the hub into the ground.

    • A position sensing apparatus and method useful for surveying, marking, and grading implement sensing and control is disclosed. The position sensing apparatus includes two laser reference stations, each of which projects a laser beam that periodically sweeps in a plane across the area to be surveyed. Each time a laser beam strikes the opposite reference station, a radio timing signal is broadcast by that reference station. The position sensing apparatus also includes a portable sensing station that comprises a laser beam receiver, a radio reciever, and a programmed computer. The planar position of the portable sensing station relative to the reference stations is computed by a triangulation technique based on the relative timing of detection of the laser beams by the laser beam receiver and the reception of the radio timing signals by the radio receiver. Elevation is determined according to the height at which one of the laser beams strikes the laser beam receiver.

A novel housing and sealing arrangement positions and seals the prism for limiting shock and preventing water leakage while obviating any need for coating the rear surfaces of the prism. An eccentric tilting knob simplifies angular tilt setting while a convenient transit knob simplifies azimuth adjustment. Vertical sighting holes in the yoke of the assembly provide for convenient plumbing of the assembly. A uniquely configured dust cover is designed for convenient storage on the back of the prism housing during use of the assembly. Target indicia are applied to both the front and back surfaces of the dust cover to provide a novel target device which may be secured to the face of the prism and to the back of the prism for range targeting with an offset and without an offset, respectively.
