    • Disclosed are a process and an apparatus for improving tobacco raw material. The process mainly comprises performing an extraction from at least one of tobacco leafs, tobacco flakes, tobacco powder, stalks and cut stems by mixed solvents, conducting a solid-liquid separation for the tobacco raw material, applying the extract liquor of tobacco leaves, flakes and cuts for manufacturing tobacco extract and that of stalks and cut stems for manufacturing fertilizer, diluting and mixing a given amount of tobacco aqueous extract and ethanol extract and removing harmful components so as to get feed liquid, backfilling the feed liquid to the tobacco raw material, and drying the tobacco raw material to a certain dryness to obtain the products. The apparatus is a system composed of a plurality of interconnected independent devices such as extractor, solid-liquid separator, a feed liquid backfiller, etc.

    • The invention provides a tobacco composition for use in a smoking article or a smokeless tobacco composition that includes an additive derived from a flower of the Nicotiana species. The additive can be a flower isolate derived from a flower of the Nicotiana species. In certain embodiments, the flower isolate is in the form of an extract from a flower of the Nicotiana species or in the form of a chemically transformed flower isolate, the chemical transformation being selected from acid/base reaction, hydrolysis, thermal treatment, and enzymatic treatment, the chemical transformation releasing at least a portion of a glycosidically bound compound in the flower of the Nicotiana species. The invention also provides smoking articles and smokeless tobacco compositions that include the flower additives described herein, and methods for preparing an additive derived from a flower of the Nicotiana species for addition to a tobacco composition.

    • A method for removal of selected substances from carbonaceous material by use of a solvent is provided comprising: (a) introducing the carbonaceous material containing the selected substances into an extraction zone to form a bed; (b) introducing a gas which at a given pressure liquifies at a higher temperature than the solvent, the introduction being made under a pressure and at a temperature to cause the temperature and pressure of the extraction zone to be sufficient to cause the solvent to liquify when the solvent is introduced to the extraction zone; (c) introducing into the extraction zone the solvent capable of extracting the selected substance; (d) passing the solvent through the bed of carbonaceous material to extract the substances from the material; (e) removing the resulting substance/solvent mixture from the extraction zone to a separation zone under conditions which will maintain the solvent in liquid form as it is passed through the bed of carbonaceous material and out of the extraction zone to the separation zone; and (f) separating the solvent from the substances in the separation zone.

    • This invention provides a method for reducing the protein content of tobacco material which includes extracting the tobacco material with a solution containing a surfactant. The tobacco material may be first extracted with an aqueous solvent to produce an aqueous extract before being treated with the solution containing a surfactant. This invention also provides a method for removing polypeptides from an aqueous extract of tobacco material which includes treating the extract with an insoluble adsorbent selected from the group comprising hydroxyapatite and a fuller's earth mineral such as bentonite. Treatment of the aqueous extract with bentonite will produce an extract having a reduced pigment and polypeptide content.
