    • A vent and pressure relief system for locomotive fuel tanks includes a short standpipe supporting a baffled overflow vessel connected with a drain conduit. The standpipe is made high enough to prevent the overflow of the fuel therefrom during all operating and braking conditions of the locomotive, except for the moment of high deceleration which occurs only at the instant of a full stop. The overflow vessel is made large enough to contain any overflow of fuel from the standpipe occurring during a full stop, and includes baffling to prevent the loss of fuel out the drain conduit and fuel return means to return spilled fuel to the tank. The standpipe, overflow vessel and drain conduit are made large enough to provide an overflow path that prevents tank overpressure when filling, should the automatic equipment of the filling station fail to cut off when the fuel tank is full.

    • A cylindrical tank supported on the frame of a vehicle for transporting a mixture of manure and a further liquid, usually water. To prevent the agglomeration of solid and semi-solid materials within the tank, guide members are provided to produce recirculating and swirling motions of the mixture within the tank as the result of normal movements of the vehicle while carrying the tank during travel, such motions being produced primarily by deceleration of the vehicle. The main guide member is supported in the tank so as to be inclined downwardly to the rear whereby when the vehicle stops, the liquid mixture tends to surge forward up the inclined guide member. A second guide member extending from the top of the tank downwardly at an inclination opposite to that of the first guide member and above same tends to prevent liquid mixture which has surged into the forward portion of the tank from sloshing to the rear in the upper part of the tank. The forward part of the first guide member is curved downwardly coinciding with the surface of the cylinder to guide the forward surged liquid under the first guide member. A hinge at the rear of the first guide member permits a portion of the first guide member to be rotated upwardly by the returning liquid, the rearmost part of the hinged portion being proximate a rear discharge valve.

    • A sewage system having a central drywell pump room surrounded by a circular-segment well system comprising first and second wet wells and a third or overflow retention well. System-intake is into a distribution chamber located at a segment-well separating the first and second wet wells and having sluice gates for normal-operation diversion into either of these wet wells and provision for emergency overflow into both these wells; the third well connects with the first and second wet wells by means of an overflow port located at a level higher than the distribution chamber and by means of a primary drain line and a secondary drain line; a station overflow pipe in the third well higher than the overflow port provides the ultimate emergency relief; pumps in the pump room provide discharge connection in parallel, with a first pump for reducing the first wet well level, a second pump for reducing either wet-well level or both simultaneously, and a third pump for reducing the second wet well level; sluice gates provide interconnection between the wet wells; the dry-well rises within an isolating wall to a capping deck having a superstructure above sheltering pump motors for the pumps; manholes and access ladders and platforms permit inspection and special operation of the wet wells and overflow retention well.

    • 1,120,579. Distribution and separation of liquids; electrostatic separators. PETROLITE CORP. 26 Sept., 1966 [18 April, 1966], No. 42937/66. Headings BID, B1M and B2J. An emulsion treater has an emulsion distributor in the form of an inverted horizontally disposed trough 30 submerged in the body of separated liquid which has an interface at 44, a horizontal row of openings 40 spaced along at least one of the side or top walls of the trough providing an outlet for the emulsion fed into the trough through an inlet above its open bottom, the interface between the emulsion and the denser separated at liquid being maintained at a level below the open bottom and the row of openings. The treater may have a pre-treatment gas separation chamber 21, a foraminous electrode arrangement 50, 51 coalesces dispensed particles of the denser liquid in the upper portion of the treater. The lower electrode 51 is engaged by high voltage a.c. rippled by a transformer 60. The'treated separated liquids are withdrawn through valved outlets 48 and 77, any solids collecting in the pretreatment chamber 21 being removed through outlet 80 and gas through outlet 82. Two rows of openings may be provided with the internal trough interface being below the level of at least one of the rows.
