    • A system for transferring a product from a source which includes a safety cut-off feature for preventing the transfer of the product. The system includes a tubular member adapted to handle the transfer of the product therethrough, a remote connector, a product connector, and an electric circuit. The tubular member has a proximal end, a distal end, and at least two separate conductive paths, including first and second conductive paths, each extending between the proximal and distal ends. The remote connector is attached to the distal end of the tubular member for conductively connecting the first and second conductive paths in series. The product connector supplies the tubular member with the product from the source and conductively connects to the second conductive path, whereby the product connector and the tubular member define a product transfer path. The electric circuit passes an electric current through a monitored electrical path which includes the first conductive path, the remote connector, the second conductive path, and the product connector, and terminates the transfer of the product in response to an interruption in the electric current. Preferably, at least one of the components may be releasably attached for easy reattachment after separation.

    • A method for making a pressure tank includes procuring a metallic feed pipe (12) with a substantially cylindrical outer surface (312), a bore (21), and, at an attachment end thereof, an annular ring (350) protruding from the cylindrical outer surface. A dissolvable mandrel (410) in the shape of the desired tank or pressure vessel is made. The mandrel includes a neck portion (412, 414) dimensioned to fit within the bore of the feed pipe. If necessary, the outer surface of the mandrel is rendered electrically conductive, as for example by metal sputtering or evaporation, or by electroless deposition. A thin layer (328) of ductile metal is then electrolytically deposited over the outer surface of the mandrel, extending onto the outer surface of the feed pipe in the pipe-to-tank coupling region, closely fitting over the annular ring, to thereby form a tank liner. A composite reinforcing shell (322) is formed around the liner, and extending over the liner in the coupling region. Thereafter, a solvent is applied to dissolve the mandrel. In a particular embodiment, the ductile metal is copper, the metallic pipe is steel, and the composite material is graphite-fiber reinforced epoxy, applied in the form of a yarn, tow or tape which may be preimpregnated with partially cured epoxy resin, or which if not preimpregnated, is impregnated during winding. The epoxy is cured to form the reinforcing shell. A spacecraft includes a thruster engine, a tank as described, and interconnecting plumbing.

    • A portable, battery powered apparatus is provided for determining and displaying the amount of time that a fixed supply of breathable gas can sustain a consumer who wishes to breathe the gas at one or more ambient pressures. The apparatus include a device for measuring the ambient pressure in the vicinity of the consumer at least once every ten second and for generating signals representative of the ambient pressure. A device is provided for measuring the pressure of the supply gas and for generating signals representative of the supply gas pressure. The apparatus preferably includes a programmed microprocessor which periodically receives a series of supply gas pressure measurement signals and periodically determines from the series of supply gas pressure measurement signals the average rate at which the supply gas was consumed (Consumption Rate) over a time at least five times as long as the average time between the supply gas pressure measurements. A normalized Consumption Rate is determined by normalizing each determined Consumption Rate to compensate for the ambient pressure on the consumer during the time period over which the Consumption Rate was determined. A normalized Consumption Time is determined by dividing a supply gas pressure measurement by the normalized Consumption Rate. A projected Consumption Time is determined for one or more ambient pressures of interest by adjusting the normalized Consumption Time to each ambient pressure of interest. A display is provided for receiving and displaying to the consumer one or more projected Consumption Times and one or more associated ambient pressures.
