    • A cooling oil cut-off valve is disclosed for use in a clutch having a rotatable drum fixed to a drive member and a rotatable hub fixed to a driven member. The hub is arranged within the drum so as to form a clutch chamber in which is positioned a clutch pack. The clutch pack is radially attached to both the drum and the hub and is axially engageable by a hydraulically actuated piston. Fluid flow to the piston is provided by means of a first fluid passage while the flow of cooling oil to the clutch chamber is provided by a second fluid passage. The clutch drum also contains a bore formed therein which intersects the first and second passages and which contains a cooling oil cut-off valve. The cooling oil cut-off valve is movable by fluid pressure to a first position when the clutch is engaged to permit cooling oil to flow to the clutch pack. The cut-off valve is also movable to a second position by centrifugal force which is generated by the rotational movement of the clutch drum to prevent the flow of cooling oil to the clutch pack when the clutch is disengaged. The cooling oil cut-off valve is designed to initially start moving toward the open position at a higher pressure than needed to keep it moving toward said open position.

    • An improved heavy duty motor clutch drive system is disclosed which includes a motor adapted to be drivingly connected to apparatus to be driven by means of a clutch unit of the oil shear type which may be selectively actuated by application of fluid pressure. Improved electrically actuated control valve means are provided for controlling the application of actuating fluid pressure to the clutch unit and includes associated control circuitry for operating the control valve so as to accelerate the driven apparatus in a predetermined manner. Additionally, in some applications a plurality of such drive systems may be utilized to drive a common apparatus in which case the clutch actuating controls may be interconnected so as to provide progressive predetermined delay actuation of the various clutch units. Safety override means are also incorporated into the control circuitry which are designed to deactuate the clutch unit so as to disconnect the motor from the driven apparatus in response to abnormal operating conditions.

    • A system for controlling pressure of a fluid, specifically the pressure of servo oil delivered to a clutch which determines the torque transmitted by the clutch. The system includes a pump, a pressure regulating valve to provide servo oil at constant pressure from the pump, and a pilot valve controlled by a solenoid responsive to electric current to vary the pressure in a pilot fluid line supplied from the constant pressure line. The oil is delivered from the fixed pressure line to the clutch by a throttling flow control servo valve which can open for rapid filling of the clutch cylinder. This valve is biased to close by the delivered pressure and biased to open by the pilot pressure. It may also be biased to close by a spring, and in this case be restrained from completely closing, so that the valve assumes its minimum area when the delivered pressure is slightly less than the pilot pressure. The clutch supply line is connected to the pump inlet through a by-pass servo valve which opens when the delivered pressure exceeds the pilot pressure, thus equalizing the delivered pressure with the pilot pressure. This valve also provides for rapid emptying of the clutch cylinder.

    • A multi-disc hydraulically operated friction clutch is provided with valve means in the form of longitudinally split plugs received in the drain openings of the plunger and varying the flow passage area of these openings, depending on the position of the plunger. Said plugs of the valve means are displaced, on the one hand, by the contact thereof with the pressure disc of the clutch, and, on the other hand, by their abutting against the housing of the clutch. By selecting the ratings of the valve means, i.e., the dimensions of the drain slit in the plugs, it is possible to ensure any required degree of smoothness of engagement of the clutch, the pressure disc acting upon the package of the friction discs with a gradually varying effort, proportional to the rate of draining of the working fluid through the plunger.
