    • According to one embodiment, a magnetic recording medium includes a substrate, a soft magnetic layer, an underlayer, a magnetic recording layer, and a protective layer, wherein the magnetic recording layer is provided with a pattern including recording portions and non-recording portions, the non-recording portions have a composition that is equal to a composition obtained by demagnetizing the recording portions, the non-recording portions contain at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of vanadium and zirconium and at least one element selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron and oxygen, and the at least one element selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron and oxygen is contained in the non-recording portions at a higher content than the content of the at least one element selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron and oxygen in the recording portions.

    • A light emitting device is provided. The light emitting device includes a light emitting element that emits ultraviolet light or short-wavelength visible light; and at least one phosphor that is excited by the ultraviolet light or short-wavelength visible light to emit visible light. The at least one phosphor includes a first phosphor including a composition represented by the formula: M1O2.aM2O.bM3X2:M4, where M1 is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Ti, Zr, and Sn; M2 is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Zn; M3 is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Zn; X is at least one halogen element; M4 is at least one element essentially including Eu2+ selected from the group consisting of rare-earth elements and Mn; a is in the range of 0.1≦a≦1.3; and b is in the range of 0.1≦b≦0.25.

    • In an image reading apparatus, a plurality of reading sensors extend in a main scanning direction and separated from each other in the main scanning direction so as to be located in a staggered arrangement in which a part of one of the reading sensors in the longitudinal direction faces a part of adjacent one of the reading sensors in a sub-scanning direction. A first connection member is provided to the part of one of the reading sensors facing the part of the adjacent one of the reading sensors. The first connection member protrudes toward the adjacent one of the reading sensors. A second connection member is provided to the part of the adjacent one of the reading sensors facing the part of the one of the reading sensors. The second connection member protrudes toward the one of the reading sensors. The first and second connection members are brought into contact with each other by being urged by a spring.
