    • A sputtering apparatus has a permanent, magnet for forming, in front of a target, a magnetic field for magnetron discharging. The permanent magnet is disposed behind the target and an RF induction discharge coil is disposed in front of the target. The permanent magnet is contained inside an evacuated cathode case which is in the form of a container and which is provided therein with a circulation passage for cooling water. The cathode case and the RF induction discharge coil are enclosed therearound by a metallic cover which has an aperture for emitting sputtered particles. To make an element for a magnetoresistance head, a substrate is transferred from a load lock chamber to a pre-treatment chamber to clean it therein by an etching apparatus. The substrate is then transferred to an ultrahigh vacuum film deposition chamber which is provided therein with a plurality of inductively coupled RF plasma-assisted magnetron sputtering apparatuses which are evacuated to an ultrahigh vacuum. Extremely thin multiple layers of flat non-magnetic layers and magnetic layers are alternately deposited therein on the substrate. The deposition is controlled by opening and closing a shutter which is disposed in a position to prevent splashing of the sputtered particles to the substrate. The substrate is moved to a position of respective sputtering apparatuses inside the film deposition chamber to deposit different kinds of films.

    • A double-chuck mechanical pencil comprises: a barrel; a barrel cap attached to the barrel; a lead tank axially slidably inserted in the barrel; a back chuck fixedly joined to the front end of the lead tank; a chuck ring loosely fitted on the chucking head of the back chuck; a tubular member disposed so as to surround the front portion of the lead tank; a back elastic member placed in the tubular member so as to bias the lead tank backward; a coupling member combined with the tubular member, and provided in its inner circumference with stopping portions with which the tubular member and the chuck ring come into contact, respectively; a front chuck fixedly joined to the front portion of the coupling member; and a front elastic member interposed between the barrel cap and the coupling member so as to bias the coupling member backward. A rotation prohibitor permits the axial movement of the coupling member and prohibits the rotation of the same relative to the tubular member. A tail cap is attached to the back end of the barrel and a push cap is detachably put on the back end of the lead tank. Another rotation prohibitor permits the axial movement of the push cap and prohibits the rotation of the same relative to the tail cap.

    • A pad covering an air bag has a main body, a backing and a decorative member. The main body may be made from a thermoplastic elastomer and includes a tearing line which tears open when the air bag inflates, a recess formed in its outer surface spaced apart from the tearing line, and a hole formed in the recess and extending between the outer and inner surfaces of the body. The decorative member is arranged in the recess and the hole. The backing is situated on the inner surface of the main body, and has a through hole aligned with the hole of the main body. The decorative member has a decorative plate portion fitted in the recess of the main body, and a support post extending from the inner surface of the decorative plate portion and through the holes of the main body and the backing, and connected to the backing. The inner surface of the main body spaced apart from its hole and the outer surface of the backing facing the main body have mutually engaging portions which prevent the backing from being displaced along the inner surface of the main body. The main body of the pad provides a stable support for the decorative member, even though the thermoplastic elastomer is an easily expandable material.

    • In order to simplify the fabrication process, form a lightweight air bag device and increase safety by reliably preventing damage to an insert during the inflation of an air bag, a pad according to the present invention includes a pad body made of a soft synthetic resin, such as urethane, and an insert 14 formed of a synthetic resin plate material with a shape-retaining characteristic. The insert 14 includes a substantially square cylindrical base portion 16 and two opening portions 18A, 18B integrally connected to the base portion via hinge portions 17A, 17B. Arcuate, gradual shape-changing portions 23, 24 are formed at the boundary edge portions between the base portion 16 and the hinge portions 17A, 17B and at boundary edge portions between the opening portions 18A, 18B and the hinge portions 17A, 17B, respectively to distribute stresses and minimize breakage.
