    • A food slicer has a housing with a first push-button for actuating an electric switch for operating the cutting blade and a second push-button, i.e., a safety button, locking the first push-button against actuation. The second push-button actuates a mechanical lock which can be engaged and disengaged, blocking the first push-button in an inserted position of the lock, thereby preventing actuation of the electric switch that triggers an electric motor drive used to actuate a circular cutting blade. The first push-button is formed with a stop surface for the lock on which the lock is arranged, when it is in an inserted position, either at or in close vicinity of an axis extending through the center of the push-button surface, pointing in the direction of actuation, and on which the lock engages in an inserted position.

    • A gauge plate assembly for a food slicer includes a first plate including a food product contacting side and an attachment side. The attachment side has a plurality of fixed mount studs extending therefrom in an established arrangement, the mount studs attached to the first plate in a non-through manner. A support plate includes a mount side which faces the attachment side of the first plate and has a plurality of stud receiving openings in a mirror image of the established arrangement of the plurality of mount studs for alignment therewith. The attachment side of the first plate is positioned adjacent the mount side of the support plate with the plurality of mount studs inserted within the plurality of stud receiving openings. The studs are secured within the stud receiving openings in a press fit engagement in order to hold the two plate together. This arrangement provides an assembled gauge plate which does not require protruding fasteners to be machined or sealed and otherwise reduces assembly costs.

    • According to one aspect of the invention, a reciprocating saw 21, 154 comprises a housing 23, 154 pivotable about a first axis 29. A blade holder 49 is mounted for reciprocation along a second axis 53 perpendicular to the first axis. An angular blade drive train 61 is directly connected between a motor 43 and the blade holder. The angular blade drive permits the blade axis of reciprocation 55 to be adjusted in a plane parallel to the saw sidewalls 177. Drive train 61 consists solely of a rotary section 63 and a reciprocating section 65. The rotary section is connected directly between the motor and the reciprocating section. The reciprocating section is connected directly to the blade holder. According to a second aspect of the invention, a reciprocating saw 21,154 comprises a housing 23, a drive train 61, a blade holder 49, and a connector 59. Blade holder 49 is rotatably mounted in connector 59 for rotation about an axis 53 parallel to and spaced from an axis 55 of reciprocation of output bar 57.

    • A shearing machine includes a generally hexagonal shearing blade and a generally rectangular shearing blade on each of an upper and a lower jaw. The hexagon forms a point at the forward end of the hexagonal shearing blade dividing a main shearing edge from an auxiliary shearing edge. A hexagonal edge at the rear of the hexagonal shearing blade forms a relief edge which unloads shearing forces to permit full shearing force to be directed to the rectangular shearing blade during a final stage of shearing a sheet of material. An end of the rectangle is preferably abutted to a portion of the relief edge, without provision for a gap or clearance therebetween. Embodiments are disclosed in which the shape of the shearing blade is non-hexagonal. In one disclosed embodiment, the shape of the shearing blade is non-polygonal, in that at least one edge is a curve.
